So the winter wheels are going in the loft for lady P_G's A2, but I'm curious as to how people store their wheels. I have always laid them flat on the floor on their side and stacked one on top of the other, so 2x2 in effect. It doesn't seem to damage the side walls of the tyres because the rims support most of the weight. However I wondered whether I should be storing them upright on their tread? But if they are not being moved / rotated might this cause a pressure flat spot on them?

So stick to what I have done previously or stand upright? They are also in tyre bags for clean storage.

They should never be stored flat on there sides as it can effect the strength of the side walls.

They say you should over inflate the tyre so as not to damage it when its standing up (can cause flat spot and deformation) in storage.

You can actually buy tyre storage racks, like a pole with spacers that you put the wheels onto, so there on there sides, but they tyre does not come in contact with the floor and wheels when stacked.

I know this due to our service garage having to get rid of loads of 4x4 tyres due to them being incorrectly stored. We was having a series of blow outs.

What if the tyres aren't on wheels and a rack can't be installed?

I've got my winters in the spare room at home as I've run out of dry/secure outside space. It's always cold in there. What's best: stacked (4) on their sides?Sitting upright in a row? Something else? Would rotating them every month be enough?

You only really need to overinflate the tyres if you are storing them mounted on a car. And even then modern radials suffer less from this kind of thing.

Just stand them upright and they will be fine - after all they are used to supporting 400+kgs static with minimal problems so 10kg's ish of the tyres own weight is trivial.
If you want, it won't hurt to overinflate a tad.

As for tyres off a wheel and cant install a rack then definately upright. Stacking them would damage the sidewalls as sonny says.
The best option for the home is a tyre bag/sack and nail this to the wall.
