Clio 172 Cup, track car to race car

Iv posted this on other forums, buit thought I would post on here as well (seeing as there is no project forum), seeing as there is another track day car thread running.

Two week I picked up a Clio 172 cup, as a potential track day car as the RS4 is in retirement. For those that dont know the 172 cup is a special edition model that has been engineered to be lighter. It has no ABS, no A/C, has thinner glass all round, Speedline Turini alloys, has lighter cloth seats and has a wider front track axel. This makes it 89kg lighter than a normal 172/182.

This car already has some modification done to it which are;

K-Tec DTH throttle bodies with Gen90 ECU, mapped by K-Tec.
Flyby wire removed and replaced with cable throttle
Clio 182 exhaust header.
200 crossover sports cat.
K-Tec stainless stealth supersport exhaust system.
Powerflex dog bone mount.
Spax lowering springs
Lockable aero bonnet catches (due to Throttle bodies)
Toyo Proxes T1-R tyres all round(2 fronts was brand new).
Rated to 200bhp

However before I pump money into it I will take it to a test day as Brands to see if I actually get on with the car and to see if this car is for me. If so then let the modifications begin.

The plans are as follows, done is phases as to how important I rate the mods for track.

To do list.

Check De-phaser pulley and cambelt (think it has been done already)
Service
PAS fluid change

Phase 1
RBF600 brake fluid
DS2500 front pads
Braided hoses
Negative camber shims rear
OMP front and rear strut braces
Whiteline rear uprated ARB
Q LSD diff
GAZ Coilovers
Front alloy suspension top mounts (fixed non-adjusting)
Powerflex poly suspension bushes
Lightweight pulleys
Breather pipe catch can
Cat Cams and tune up (throttle bodies) possible same time as De-phaser pulley is done.
TPMS Fitted (aftermarket) already have
Speedline 2118 15” alloys (Part slick set and wet weather set)

Phase 2
Strip interior
Fire extinguisher system
Electric cut off switch inside and out
Sabelt Renaultsport steering wheel
Steering wheel boss kit with air bag resister
Boss button plate (horn).
Recaro Pole Positions (source sub-frame)
3’’ 4 point harness
Bolt in roll cage with padding
Front CF or plastic door cards
Rear rain light
Tow loop front and rear
Brake cooling ducts fitted to Fog light housing
Race battery (relocated to rear)
Sunstrip
KTR Lightweight flywheel

Phase 3 (maybe’s)
CF front splitter
DTM CF wing mirrors
CF Bonnet
Polycarbonate windows with side vents
Single wiper conversion

Here are some pics, overall the body work and interior is in very good condition, almost a shame to strip it. The engine bay can do with some TLC and a new firewall screen. I also love the after market race exhaust kept as the stealth system.

Looks like an interesting project Sonny, will keep you busy and mean you can enjoy the RS for what it is and focus your tweaking on the Clio! I've always got to be tinkering with/building something and if I had a garage it would probably be a TVR of some sort :bash:

Yep it sure sounds meaty on the throttle bodies. Its a dream of mine to own a car on ITBs. Cant beat that sound. But not as good sounding Dellortos or Webbers

That is going to be a mint car to track sonny, the Clio's race prepped are unreal on grip and nimbleness.

Totally agree, I have never driven this model of Clio, but have been around Brands in a normal 172 in the wet. I must say I was impressed, the breaking zones was a lot later than would be in the RS4 due to the weight difference. It will take me a while to re-learn FWD driving!

Fur sure, got a quote today for some sports cams, so that should make it more meaty. The car already idles at 1100rpm :thumb:

Right little update,

Been busy ordering bits for the Clio.

Got her booked in at KTR racing for some aggressive Cat 428 cams, new VVT pulley, and cam belt (to be safe). Will also have a updated remap and ITB tune up. Hopefully this will get her about 210bhp.

Ordered some new front Brembo discs with DS2500 pads and KTR braided hoses.

Along with some chassis upgrades such as front camber bolts, rear camber shims, front and rear stutt braces, rear ARB, new steering wheel and boss with sparco buttons. New front solid strut mounts, brake ducting, new HT leads, spark plugs and lightweight racing battery.

Also got some Speedline 2118 alloys with AO48s (192/50/15)

Only thing now is the suspension, looking at the Spax RSX coilovers.

This will keep me busy for the time being and now im bloody skint haha expensive week.

Thanks to Revolution for price matching ;)

Blimey Sonny, easy tiger you'll have a 20K Clio before you know it.
