Variable Speed Limit cameras

Inspired by the average speed camera thread, there is a question that's been bugging me.

The variable speed cameras on the overhead gantry - are they ever really turned off? I don't dare go under them too fast even if the signs are off, but I have seen people shoot through them at silly speeds.

if you were the government, why would you turn them off? :?

On the southern clockwise stretch of the M25 it has the camera signs on the gantry but no boxes for 50% of the gantries. I recently updated my road angel and this alerted me as to what gantries had the camera in, i was able to confirm this by looking in the rear view mirror. In the day you can see the tops of the grey boxes.

Yeah, my tomtom warns me which ones have cameras in, but are they on when they're off, if you see what I mean?

i've often thought about that too,

it isn't a problem in the a4, but know i have the 6 i'm gonna have to watch that speedo!

i used to use the m25 daily, and was always led to believe they were only active when the variable speed limit was shown, but never brave enough to test that out!

They are only active when speed is restricted

If no speed displayed then not active

I am brave (see stupid) enough to fly through them (never about 100 thou just in case)

Iv even been flashed by them!

Answer to your question as to why the govnmt would not leave them on is becuase they don't currently have the legislation in place to enfore them 24/7

But its coming

Once all the works on the M1 are complete I suspect the govnmt will seek to get the appropriate laws passed to rape thr motorists some more, but prob be an 80mph limit at that point

Can vouch for dk have also been snapped (camera flash) on the M1 near Hemel Hempstead was doing about 80 at 2am in the morning.Caused a few sleepless nights I can tell you...But did not get summons!!

Can scar a grown man for life the period between getting flashed and the waiting game for the summons in the post!!

It was my understanding as well that the cameras are only live when a lower limit is in place than 70 - ie. the camera are off at 70 mph. I also gather they have more leeway than most cameras - you'd have to be doing more like 60 to get nicked in a 50
