RS6 Leaking Gearbox

Post by audi_driver79 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 9:05 pm

Hi All,

Well after many months happy motoring barring the odd thing eg tyre and battery the service by Audi threw up 'Excessive oil leaking from gearbox'. Thinking they were blowing it out of proportion I placed some cardboard under the car while the car was stood so its not excessive. I got my usual garage to check it and they have said its leaking from:

rear prop seal
gearbox sump seal
possible flywheel oil seal

Obviously it needs attention but I need to know if there are any specialists or recommended companies for doing this in the North East? Also what would you recommend doing as I intend to keep the car for as long as possible. What sort of figure should I be looking at to get the job done properly?

I kind of guessed I'd get that reply! Just wanted reassurance. Looks like I could be driving it to the other side of the country then. Am I right in saying they have the technology and will rebuild it better than ever? Then I can modify other bits????

The rear main will be engine oil so black in colour , the gear oil should be clear / golden , this is the most common and we would recommend a gear box service ,

Hi Grizz,

Obviously I know of you and your knowledge of the RS6 in all things mechanical. The oil is golden in colour so a gearbox service would entail taking the box out and replacing seals? If you could IM me an idea of the price it would be nice to know as it will take organising as I am some distance from you. Thanks for your help.

No need to take the gearbox out to service it. There are a few gaskets to replace and seals along with filters and then the all important ATF oil. You can get it done while you wait. Have a browse around and maybe get a remap while your there. :biggrin3:

Update on that:

Finally got round to taking it to my local ex Audi garage and expected it to be there for awhile. After only one day they told me that 2 bolts were loose near the back of the box near the prop shaft. They are now torqued up and the oil is still at a good level so have advised me to see if it is still leaking.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? My car is now on nearly 79k and 80k is time for the gearbox oil change anyway isn't it? Just wondered what everybody thought.....

I was kind of hoping that you would say you had seen that before. I will monitor it and obviously if its still a problem I will get the propshaft oil seal replaced when the oil change is done. One day I will visit unit 20 and it probabaly will be for a remap!
