BMW M5(F10) & Audi RS5 on my drive-which to take tomorrow?

Post by 535dboy » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:25 pm

So couple of calls to my respective BMW and Audi dealers to ask for a drive of the new M5 and another go with the RS5 has resulted me having both for a long weekend !!!

Doing a day trip (320 mile round trip) to see inlaws tomorrow and although thankfully I prefer the Audi, I'm swaying on taking the BM for the novelty factor!

BM is far too powerful in this weather and traction is really quite poor. No such probs with RS with its quattro.

RS5 sounds 100 times better than the M5 too, particularly on the inside.

Here are some pics for now. Will post more after the trips (I have a long road trip on Monday too for the RS)

I would take the BMW unless it was really wet or you were snowed in. Look at the breakes on the Beemer, especially the rear ones, they are humongous.

That should have said brakes not breakes! Yeah, agree on the blue and chrome. Still an awesome car though, and I'd still take it over an RS 5.

Rip those wheels off the Beemer and chuck 'em on the RS, job done.
Yes, I know the PDC is different...

While your at it, move the two turbos across to the RS too, it will make better use of them with quattro.

have bmw disabled the fake engine noise played through the speakers?

it got slated for this in EVO, but VBH said it sounded naff last night and you dont seam that impressed either.

nice cars, but for the love of gawd stop blacking out the rear glass panels and giving them the side profile of a bread van ....

may as well just paint the car in burberry ...

I'm not sure what the sound is (nothing like the RS5)-sometimes it just sounds like a jet engine (not in a good way!)

The old V10 m5 sound awesome, let down by <beep> gearbox

This has great box and .....

I remember reading a sick rumour that the E60 M5 went to the states with a manual gearbox, Audi are doing that fake noise on the C7 A6 too, next thing you know we're going to have 4 pots sounding like American muscle cars.
The fact BMW have put a speaker in the exhuast of the M5 though has suddenly made the car uncool.

There's no way it'll be Emanual... although it has it's advantages in the US or A.

Right - quick update having put about 500 miles on each (!) car over the last few days

Looks are always subjective of course and the Audi is not in the best spec/colour - there are better that suit the car better.

Here are a couple of pics of the previous RS5s I have had

Personally I do not think the BMW looks any better than the audi (although I do love the BM's wheels). The first M5 I saw at a different dealer was the same colour as this one and I just walked passed it thinking it was just another 520d M Sport

The BM is clearly a formidable car........in the dry !!! In this recent weather it has barely any grip. combination of poor roads, Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and turbo engine power delivery.

It will easily wheelspin (or try to) up to the national speed limit (and a smidge beyond) and a couple of times even on part throttle overtaking maneovers the back would wiggle which all in all is a bit un-nerving.

The Audi, despite only having 450BHP, just does not break traction at all despite how cruel you are to it.

Economy probably about the same at c20/21 mpg (did get 25.5 out of the audi on a motorway run yesterday)

In the dry the BMW is agruably just too fast for these roads

So overall I am glad it is the Audi (RS4) that I have my money down for next year and there is no way I would consider the M5 in this country with our variable weather. If the rumoured 4 wheel drive car came out then that would be a much better prospect.

Thats lousy for the M5 - official figures are supposed to be up in the 28's average.
