A1 to A1 - Registration limbo time

Evening all,

I hope you could assist me with a query. I've tried the Direct.gov website but no joy for this scenario.

My A1 (number two) is about two weeks away, so I am told. I visited my dealer a couple of Saturdays ago and did all the necessary to get my personalised reg back on retention.

Tonight I've opened my post and sure enough, I now have a new retention certificate along with a new V5 sporting the new reg number.

Until I phone the dealer tomorrow morning, first thing, do I now have an illegal plate on my car?

Now, I didn't see this coming back in November, as I didn't know until the unveiling of the car that it was a mis-build. My thought is to go to the dealer first thing (in the A1) and get the plate changed to that on the new V5. However, it's a Saturday and I wonder if they'll have admin working Saturday mornings to be able to do the tax disc too.

Due to the questionable legality of the plate (and my insurance!) during this time in limbo, I think I'd rather leave the A1 behind tomorrow and ask to be put in another car until I pick up the new one.

Thanks for your advice.

I believe you have a period of time to effect the swap without any problems. I presume DVLA sent you a replacement tax disc and a request for you to return the other when you're ready?

When I sold my LCR I'd done the plate transfer about a month before it was sold and just took the plates off and the tax disc when I took it in to the dealer.

Sorted, thanks for that. Phoned up the dealer, who had the tax disc in the admin dept ready and waiting; went along and had the new plates fitted. Notified insurance company who are charging me an admin fee of about £17, but have asked them to waive the next charge for notifying them of the change of plate and car in a couple of weeks. They had better have notes on their system about that!
