Private plate transfers..

Post by the6 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:53 pm

Need help.
Basically I am selling my car the day before I buy the new one.
I need the plate from my current to be transfered to the new one (which has a private plate too) , but I need this to be done before I sell, BUT how does it work with the V% If I go to DVLA and change plates, how can I gte the new owner to fill in the V5 ETC? As it will be retained by dvla when I change AAAAARRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHH any advise would help.

It's a crap process and can take weeks!
I'd put yours on retention, means a trip to the Dvla and £105 quid. You won't get the new v5 back for up to 4 weeks though! Then you can worry about putting it on the plus whenever.
If you've got a good relationship with the buyer you could arrange for this to happen under his ownership but it will be on the car for a couple of weeks and legally his if the v5 is in his name.
Tricky one if you're in a rush, Dvla won't help either...I'm still waiting for my new tax disc and mot back from them since Monday and they do that locally, the v5's come from Swansea and take longer...

Just taking mine of my car at the moment, took about a week to get the initial paperwork back (MOT and Tax) The V5 takes longer..... I download ten form fro Driect.go.UK and set it to my local office.

I seem to remember it was the plate transfer that held Grizz up from getting his plus too...

its VERY simple.

Download the V317, fill it out, but for registered owner details have the NEW OWNER fill out his details & sign as he is the new owner of your old grey '6, then put your details as the GRANTEE (i.e. it will be put on retention)

Fill out the V5 as normal when selling a car, give him the V5C and you keep the V5 to send off

but, only thing different is you need to keep the original MOT ... give the new owner a photocopy ... if he has a problem with this, tell him to SHUT UP as it makes no ends

Then, send to your DVLA office

- completed V5
- completed V317
- MOT
- Cheque for £105

Then, a new V5, MOT & Tax Disc will be sent to the new owner and you will be sent a registration retention cert for your reg ... oh and your bank will be debited £105

HEY PRESTO

HOLY FAXXORS AKA, you are a star, nice one buddy.
I will make sure I hold fast tomorrow to the letter, although the new owner has his own plate that I belive he wants to put on the car now, therefore, if we do to DVLE together, he can transfer the plate to my car, I can then retain my plate, then sell him my car and with a bit of luck put my plate straight on the new car????

tbh, I'd just tell him he cant put his plate on the car, and he should just wait till he gets the goverment reg and new log book etc in a few weeks

it might cause more hassle for you...

I've used the above process when selling Darth to Bam_Bam and worked a treat, did it when sold my RS 4 and worked and did it when my missus sold her little A2 with my reg on and it worked

bullet proof
