Purchasing from Mytyres

Post by gottanS » Fri Oct 01, 2010 11:20 pm

Just tried to purchase some winter tyres from mytyres.co.uk, they accepted the order and then requested I fax a utility bill to an unknown number as part of fraud prevention measures.

Has anyone had experience of mytyres.co.uk and what is to me a bizarre request and very suspect.

I told them to cancel the order as I will not send that sort of info out.

Ha ha, I posted a thread about the exact same thing earlier this year - http://audisrs.com/about11522.html&highlight=mytyres
ScottR wrote:Beginning to wish I hadn't bothered with MyTyres now, they seem to be a bunch of weirdos!

First I get a call to say that they can't complete my order until I give them my home address (the tyres are being sent to one of their approved fitting stations) and also my landline number. Told them I didn't have a landline and they said "Can you give me a neighbour or friend's landline number instead?". What good is that?? And how many people even bother with landlines these days??

Thought I had finally got things sorted, then today check my emails to find this...

WTF??? I'm trying to buy two rubber hoops, not order dynamite!!
I went with Pneus Online in the end. Tyres arrived within a couple of days and were only about £10 more expensive IIRC.

I intially sent them an e-mail asking if the tyres were in stock and delivery options, they never mentioned needing to fax anything at the time so bit pee'd off with this.

What is interesting is that Pneus Online was listed on the bottom of that e-mail so must be part of the same group but with such a different experience. Once I have checked they haven't nabbed the money I will sort some out elsewhere.

I did mention in my reply to the request for a copy of a utility bill that I thought it was a phishing attempt and it would be reported to the police, still credit card company first.

I ordered a set of dunlop winter sport 3d's from them. Took a while to deliver but eventually got them. Didn't get asked any questions like you did thugh.

I've used them for years now and only issue is the sometimes slow delivery. Don't expect delivery in less than a week.

After this experience, wouldn't touch them with someone else's barge pole. They should be open and honest about what is involved in the ordering process, quite honestly I'd rather buy the winter tyre package from Audi, its less hassle than dealing with companies like mytyres.

Well i'm getting less impressed by the minute with mytyres, they have taken the money for the tyres from my credit card before they sent the proof of address fraud e-mail.

Only slight positive is they have an 0800 free phone number so I can abuse them without costing me anymore money.

To be fair this will be due to the increase in credit card fraud .....

This way they can be sure the card is not stolen so avoiding a charge back from the cc company ..

If someone has gone to the trouble of stealing/cloning a credit card, I'm sure it wouldn't be too much bother for them to put a fake utility bill together on Photoshop.

Don't really see it being a useful method of fraud prevention.

Grizz,

Considering I had contacted them prior to ordering they could have mentioned this and also the number they requested the document to be faxed to is not referenced on their website at all which looks very suspicious. The document requested is also very useful to potential fraudsters as well.

Their office is registered in Oxford with an 01628 pre-fix i.e. Maidenhead and the fax was to an 0121 pre-fix i.e. Birmingham i.e. completely inconsistent and suspicious.

I do not see why their fraud prevention requirements should potentially make me vulnerable to fraud.

End result no sale.

I am with Grizz on this one.

With "customer not present" transactions, the seller has to ship to the card holders address. If they do not, they may get a charge back from the issuing bank.

This is a well know scam to buy high value items on the details of a stolen credit card, have them delivered to a different address, often a rented flat or bedsit.

When the owner of the credit card notices the fraudulent transaction, they will contact their bank to claim this back, the retailer MUST prove they shipped the goods to the registered card holders address. If they cannot prove this the seller will lose the money and the goods.

I guess they have been a victim of this type of scam as I have.

Give me a ring re the tyres as I can generally better the above....

I had huge problems with Mytyres, they allow you to select on their own website that you want the tyres fitted at their local fitters and then refuse to deliver because you are having them delivered to somewhere other than your registered address !!!!- just ridiculous . Waste of time trying to talk to them on the phone, they just arn't remotely interested.
In the end I ordered from Tyremen, from what I had read on here, it was a good price and they turned with zero problems and no hassle.

i had a quote from mytyres today and found out where my local fitters would be,rang the fitters directly and they managed to beat mytyres price so needless to say i went direct to my local fitters to get a cheaper deal
