When to check engine Oil ?

Hi All,

I have a question regarding when to check engine oil. I own an Audi S4 B6.

When I check the oil cold without the engine started, the oil dipstick shows the oil well over the max line.

However when I check the oil after starting the car and letting it run for 5 minutes, the oil dipstick shows the oil just above the minimum line.

Which reading should I be going by ?

thanks Raz

In The RS4 manual is states, that engine must be started, so warm, then switched off for 2 minutes, then checked. check your manual as It might be different, some cars have dip sticks meant for cold checks, others for hot checks.

All Audi's are checked in the same way.

Vehicle should be standing on level surface, engine should be upto operating temp, oil temp should be at least 60 degrees C (100-110 degrees on RS4/6 & R8), switch engine off & allow to stand for approx 2 minutes (never more than 10 mins), then take reading.
