Looking to buy R32 Golf. Any advice ?

Pretty much as above really.

Not to replace the 6 but as a second car/daily driver.

Anyone on here with any experience of the R32 ?

Test drove one Yesterday with a DSG box and although it didn't have the kick in the back that the RS6 has it was good fun to drive and plenty fast enough.

I've checked out the R32OC Forum and it has made Me a bit wary of the DSG gearbox as there have been reports of some problems with them

It would be nice to be able to stir a manual box a bit after the lazy auto or Tiptronic in the 6.

Plus a manual would be one less thing to worry about !

I bought a new one March this year as a compromise between me and the Mrs over a car. Maybe that's the problem, it's a compromise, but i really don't like it. I've had various VW (VR6's) and Audi's but this is bar far the worst one to actually drive. Steering is too light, brakes are on or off and nothing between, and it doesn't seem to go as i'd expect for power and weight. So it leads to one question, would you like to buy mine ?

I may have enjoyed the test drive around the Cornish back roads too much as I'm so used to either the 6 which is fast but hardly agile or our daily driver Volvo V40 which is neither but makes up for that in practicality.

I had two mk5 R32,S. Loved them they were great a good compromise for a second car i,d suggest. They dont feel that quick although on paper they aint bad..heavy though thats the problem. But they sound awesome defo turn heads with that exhaust note...I,d have another tommorow actually. Mine were manual i dont like autos even DSG i like to be in control...Had no issues with mine at all reliability wise. Very stealthy as well.Only problem is if your into engine modding you are very limited in what you can do to get more power.

Dont make them anymore either so quite exclusive now...dont know how much they are these days but when i had my first one they had just come out and when i sold it on i lost hardly anything!!! residuals were good.

Sorry I have to disagree sir.... loads you can do to modify them and all bolt on... Not always cheap - I will grant you.. but can make the 350 to 500 BHP very easily and still look stealthy... If you want to know what to do to them then the R32oc, vr6oc, ed38 all have people with modded cars on them (to varying levels) and happy to chat about them all day long.

In my personal experiance, everyone who has owned one loved it and had nothing bad to say about them. As said it is a big engine in a small car and even Mr. Clarkson liked them..

On a personal note they do have a great engine note outta that VR6 lump.. :p

Got one.

Five door, DSG, DPB Metallic, Leather, Cruise control and sunroof.
Registered Jan 2007 with 16,500 Miles on the clock.

Paid more than I had planned on £16,800 which means its done a big chunk of its depreciation since it would have been close to £30,000 new.
Glasses listed it at £18,200 retail and £16,500 as a trade in so I think I did ok.

It's pretty much like a new car and has all the options I wanted.

Picked it up Thursday in Doncaster just in time for the snow !

Drove it to Halifax along the M62 that evening in a blizzard and am very pleased with its behaviour in the icy conditions.

Then put another 400 miles on it driving back to Cornwall on Friday.

First impressions, it's a brilliant piece of kit, a great Motorway cruiser with enough legroom to be comfy, enough grunt to make pulling out to overtake easy, a lovely noise when You want to hear it but quiet enough not be a pain on a long journey, confidence inspiring grip levels in the twisties and (reasonably) stealthy looks.

The DSG box really is fantastic and the gearchanges are almost seamless, not like a standard Auto box more like a CVT box, I dont think I'll really miss a manual box and with the paddles on the wheel you have the option to manually change gears anyway without letting go of the wheel.


I'll post some pics as soon as poss.
