Advice For A Renault 5 GTTurbo

Hi All,

I have owned my 5 for the last five years and have been working on turning her into a racer over that time.

Reason i am starting this topic is to ask if anyone would know about how good the std internals are. I know there will be few jokes to follow about soft french cheese and there engines but hey. lol. I have had all new internals and liners put in with arp bolts being the only non stock item. I have an EFI system to run it which is very good but what i would like to know if it is possible to make 200bhp.

When i started the figure i was looking for was not a problem but as the build has gone on, the builder has not been too confident that the lump will take it.

Anyone got any views?

Cheers,
Jase

The problem with the 1.4 is its strength when the boost is cranked up. 200bhp is easily reached on these cars (obviously with uprated cams, internals etc), its just a question of how long will it run at that level. Standard engine internals are only good on standard boost.
I had a red one about 5 years ago that ran 240bhp. I could only keep it running at that level for a single run at a time or else the turbo would end up a pile of shredded metal in the bay.
The trick is to get as much power out of the engine as possible, and then add the turbo components. Good internals and very good cooling will help. Ideally get a new block from a race engine builder and build on that. If you can get custom cams , valves and pistons made to optomise the performance of the engine then you are well on the way. It may idle like a dog and keep stalling but once revved it'll settle down. Cooling is easily sorted as there are a million and one kits out there to keep the temperature down.
Have you tried K-Tech racing down Dorset way? They are the daddies as far as 5's are concerned and have been around since noah and the arc.

I thought John Price was the man for tuning these. Always used to be good and expensive.

hi cain63,
thanks for the heads up.
i have used k-tec and they carried out all the head work to there stage 3. so the head should flow really well as its being pushed by there rollerbearing turbo. but i didnt really think uch of them to be honest.
i have also got water-methanol injection to keep things super cool with a cossie 4x4 intercooler and large oil cooler. the engine has seen the best part of £4k. lol

Who is john rice?

J
