passed a new "road works start here from April 11" sign on my daily commute today. It went on to say "delays possible, for 2 and half..."

not days...

not weeks...

not even months but...

for the next 2 and half years!!! Until September 2011.

With over-runs they should be completed by the time the Olympics start!

deep joy! Road works haven't yet had any impact on my commute so far but this morning I turned on to the dual-carriageway to be with a 40mph sign - for almost 10 miles!!

What next - SPECS average speed cameras!

I'm thinking of garaging the RS6 and getting a Nissan Micra for the next 2½ years! :(

The Hatfield tunnel on the A1(M) is about to undergo 2 years of roadworks....in order to make the tunnel comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

while toddling along on cruise control at exactly 40 mph through my 8.6 miles of roadworks I got to thinking....

It used to be a 70 mph speed limit so I used to travel it in just over 7 mins.

It's now 40 mph so takes me just over 12 mins, that's an extra 5 minutes or 10 minutes each day.

The road works are supposed to be in place from April 2009 until Sep 2011 - that's 30 months or 2.5 years.

I work roughly 220 days each year after holidays etc. So that will be an extra 5,500 minutes or 91.6 hours or 3.8 days on my life!

Tomorrow I might work out how much I'm saving in petrol or how much cheaper it would be in my son's 1.0l Nissan Micra. :)

I'm sure the £310m upgrade will all be worth while!

as I said before - one advantage of the roadworks is increased fuel economy... Might be difficult to see in this pic but the computer reckons I'll get 450 miles on this tank. 450 in an RS6 - dream on. :-)

My driving along at 40mph (+/-10%) like a man on 9 points attracts all the 'wrong' attention though. There's hardly a day goes by when I don't get someone behind me flashing their lights; shaking their fist in my rear view mirror or attempting to undertake me. Wish they'd stick some SPECS on the road then everyone else would have to drive like me. :-(

well right now my RS6 is off the road awaiting a replacement gearbox and I'm driving a 1litre Nissan Micra so I probably won't notice any difference! :-)

a few weeks of the new road and my regular average speed on my commute has gone from 36mph to 48mph and according to DIS this week I got 25.5 mpg from the last tank and it's telling me I'm gonna get almost 500 miles from this one! No way that will happen!
