I'd have said that less Co2 would be produced by running an old car rather than creating a lot making a new one?

I have two of them. The fact of the matter is that BOTH of my supercharged V8's together will create less pollution impact over the course of their entire lives than ONE Toyota Prius due to the carbon footprint of battery manufacture and pollution created by battery disposal.

Hybrids are the OPPOSITE of the answer as they are currently configured.

I have to agree completely with the last Two comments as (I cant remember the exact figures) something like 75% of the polution produced by a motor vehicle during its (average) life span is in its manufacture.

Producing more disposable vehicles is counter productive to the reduction of greenhouse gasses and most battery powered cars only use their batteries when they start up or in traffic so once they build up any sort of speed they produce the same amount of CO2 etc as any similarly sized normal petrol car.
Most priuses are bought by people who want to avoid the congestion charges in Cities so instead of getting the train or a bus they use their Prius or what ever generating CO2 most of the time they are driving when there is a bus stop or train station within 500 yards of their home.
Also as mentioned previously there is the added costs of Battery disposal, those things are just chock a block with deadly chemicals !

adding to the above think off all the processes involved in the manufacture of purely the priyew(wtf is the plural of prius?)charging system and the general costs of whatever powerplants charge them up,cracking crude is dirty and expensive but electricity is not a clean process either,especially in manufacturer stage of the batteries and in newer specialist batteries the full on costs of ingredients and transport make bateries pretty damaging to the environment and then youve still got to 'fill' them up

the cars themselves under spark or duo-fuel spewage may produce less CO2 but does their charging facilities?

Didn't Top Gear compare a Prius with an M3 around their track some time ago....and the M3 had better fuel consumption.
