Oil advice and recommendations here

I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

Regards
Guy

Guy, I'm considering fitting an oil cooler soon as I plan to track the car in the future. What I wanted to know is, do I need it?

I remember a while back you posted a high-level grid showing various oils and what their viscosity rating in Centistokes would be at various temperatures, and I noticed it was a strongly sliding scale! That grid only showed temps up to 100 degrees I think.

What sort of minimum viscosity would you see from various grades of oil at say 120 degrees? (I remember reading from one of your other excellent threads that the viscosity can differ throughout an engine as the sump is generally cooler than other parts of the oil system).

Also, you implied that 10 Centistokes is a good viscosity for high perfomance engines. At what point would the oil be too thin?

TIA

Guy,

Have you seen this thread?

There is a Spanish owner of a B7 RS4 who regularly sees oil temps in excess of 130C on the road...I guess ambient air temps down there might be anything up to 50C?

As a result he is changing his oil every 2 weeks which seems a rather drastic solution....

This is until Audi decide what to do....(I can't believe they didn't discover such a propensity during warm weather testing?)

In the meantime, is there an oil he might be able to use to avoid such regular and expensive change intervals?
