I have to buy someone a portable sat nag with street level mapping of England, Spain and France. (not europe main roads - must be street level) The prices seem to have tumbled since I last looked
Anybody have any preferences - have been told the Garmins are better than the Tom Toms but everyone seems to have Tom Tom

Also where is the cheapest price?

do a google. There are so many places doing them. Just do a bit of research as to exactly what features you really want. No point in spending bundles on the top of the range if you don't need it ;)

Personally I use a Garmin and cannot fault it.
Others have TomToms, and they love them.
It comes down to personal choice pretty much.

I went with the Garmin as it comes with MapSource software to enable you to plan routes on the pooter and then upload them to the nav. This is how I use mine most of the time (for long trips in the uk or abroad).
There is third party software to do this for the TT, but its not as good imo.

The mapping software is different between the two, so you get differing routes for the same journey between the two.
Also, shortest route can give some interesting shotrtcuts through back streets in villages to save just a few metres.
Once you know this, you learn to check the screen before blindly following the voice prompts.

Oh, and remember to turn off the 'use unpaved roads', unless you like dirt tracks and bridleways

Hope that helps,
Cheers,
John.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 360 and so far impressed with it. Tomtom, Garmin etc are all much of a muchness IMO.
I only picked the one I did because it was in the second hand computer place down town for a blooming good price.
