Dodgy S4 on Autotrader

Post by teknobod » Sat Mar 22, 2008 12:13 am

Just a quick warning to anyone considering buying this "CHEAP" S4 on autotrader:-

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/ww ... x_mileage=

I believe this car recently appeared on Ebay a number of times by a seller in the Birmingham area. The registration number is S569 AUA, I know this car as my mate has MOT'd it for the last couple of years, and at the last MOT in November it had 144k on the clock or thereabouts. The previous owner had it on Autotrader for £4,495 but I don't know what they let it go for. (It's actually a 1998 car and not 1999 as stated)

The price the buyer is asking is not overly inflated really looking at the price of other S4's with over 100k, but he is misleading prospective buyers by quoting the mileage as 63k.
Not surprisingly, the car has just been MOT'd again in February, presumably to hide the genuine mileage.

Just a heads up if your interested, but it really p's me off when people do this.

I'd definitely think there was something wrong with it being that price and mileage. Are you sure its the car you're thinking of just by that one picture though?
In addition, aren't MOTs now linked up to DVLA so they'd be able to tell if the mileage has gone down?
Perhaps its just a typo and its done 163k....

I know it isnt possible from the one picture alone on Autotrader, but there are too many similarities ie:- 2 lady owners, red, 63k, and the price (both times on Ebay it made about £4k )

To be on the safe side, I quoted the registration number. I just wanted any potential buyers on the forum to be warned if this was the same vehicle.

I'm not sure whether the VOSA data is hooked up to the DVLA, but there could be any number of reasons why a mileage culd have gone down (clock change etc). The annoying thing is that a buyer doesn't have easy access to this information.

Is it the same one I quoted (S569 AUA)?

I have reported him both to Ebay (he is now no longer a registered user) and Autotrader (no action has been taken yet)

Unfortunately, there's only so much you can do.

Seems like the same car has had a stack of upgrades done and is on the market again. This time on Pistonheads:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1973646.htm

By my reckoning, it's true mileage is around 160k now!!
(79k - 63k =16k, 16k + 144k = 160k)
Just a warning if anyone was considering this car.

I thought selling clocked cars was against the law, you know the one the police look after, surely they would be interested
