Do turbos and exhausts get hot?

Post by derdle » Wed Mar 05, 2008 11:04 pm

Although this is a Saab engine, I think it demonstrates how warm turbos and exhausts can get...and why it is necessary to let a turbo spool down after spirited use...

They get so hot, you can see the moving parts inside. This was always a good one to Escort RS turbo's. They go red and white hot... LOL

Exhaust can get really hot..... just put your hand on the tail pipes after a long run !!!!!!!!! So imagine the down pipes....

I am running no cats and the exhaust was so hot the filling inside the silencers were destroyed !!! I did end up with empty silencers and obviously bleeding hear drums :?
Had to have some special silencers (high heat resistant) from Milltek.

Have done that on a tuned Renault 5 GT turbo as well, can't recall the tuner, it was a long time ago, but a bit of fun nevertheless. They used to get 200+ bhp out of a pushrod 1,400cc engine. Reliability, what reliability?

Yeah, but that is caused by the fancy anti-lag systems the WRC cars run.
