Nissan GT-R

Post by dace » Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:35 pm

Great article in today's Mail on Sunday.

What a car. 3.8-litre V6 twin turbo 473bhp. 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds.

All for 55 grand or 7.7 million Yen.....

Can you imagine what Mihnea and Doug could do with that!

An even better write-up, lots of pics, and a head-to-head against the 997 911 turbo in this week's Autocar.

I'm sure Mihnea's already studying the map...

Probably not a lot...given that Nissan seemed fit to hamper any modifications of ECU by making it "unhackable" (not that anything REALLY is), built the turbos into the exhaust manifolds making them completely bespoke in design and have various other computer wizardry making sure that the car does not have mods done to it.
More laughable is the Jap model comes with a GPS equipped speed limiter which only can be switched off at Nissan approved racetracks, then it has to limp to a dealership for a thousand quid safety check to keep that warranty

Seems like they are well on their way to killing a legend IMHO. The only reason the older GT-R Skylines have been so popular is BECAUSE of the modification scene.

Don't get me wrong, its an awesome machine, but they seem to have missed the entire point which makes the old ones actually popular.

Have you seen it around the ring? If not, click here.

Not bad for a stock car.

Nothing is unhackable. Re-direct the data and write over the sectors at atomic level. Job done.

Warranty claims have the potential to cost a car manufacturer lots of money, there is also the potential for owners to give one side of the story all over the web and damage the manufacturers reputation. I think Nissan have taken what they consider to be reasonable steps to minimise the amount of modifications that owners can do whilst still in warranty & to try to ensure that what has been done can be seen easily to minimise disagreements.

ECU wont matter

Apexi come up with a simple plug in as Jap ecu's are a lot of headache to hack (took me 2 hours to get my old rx7 running on it) and there base maps so good means you can drive it to a tunner :)

Also impressive stuff reading about the skyline just wandering hw good this GPS limiter will be?
