Whats the law about number plates, I want to fix to the back and front, Black with Silver Letters.
I've seen a few cars with them on.
Thanks in advance.

Those are for pre-73 constructed cars only, as far as I recall, so would be illegal for your B7.
Whether or not you get tugged for it is anyone's guess, but the police are supposedly in the midst of a crackdown.

What can the police do apart from asking you to change it?
I saw them on a new black merc today...

The minimum is generally an VDR - vehicle defect rectification. Get it certified by an MoT station and then produce at police station within 7 days.
However, they can also stick you on for a fine of up to £1000, and also confiscate the registration for withdrawal by the DVLA (generally personalised plates).

As an aside the in-car automatic vehicle number plate readers the police have aren't fooled by this.

Gibraltar plates are like this, black with silver/ white lettering.
I wouldnt risk it to be honest, the police are itching to dish out fines for the Xmas disco as it is so I wouldnt give them a free invite to 60 quid and POSSIBLY points as well.
Just my 5 p worth

As previously mentioned be careful. I got stopped on the M5 and was issued with a VDR for a minor spacing issue on my plates.

Even if you get a VDR it is still illegal to use the car on the road until the defect is rectified (although you're given 7 (or 14) days to rectify the fault). So if you were stopped again by an ar*ey cop you could end up walking.
You may also find that a number plate maker will only make "legal" plates, I'm guessing that you could buy "show plates" to circumvent the making issue. But then...they are "show plates"!

If your car ever gets stolen you'll wish you had normal number plates (legal) for ANPR cameras to read it.
