How do I know which models have turbo's then ??????????

Hello
This is my first post on this forum, I have been a full time member of scoobynet.
Having sold my (extremely modified  scoob), I am looking for an Audi estate model, as I have two kids and I expect to be the proud owner of a german shepherd puppie over the next couple of months.
:D

I am trying to understand the various models, and I would like a turbo version with four wheel drive.

I obviously know that there are the 2.7 turbo versions, the diesel turbo versions, and then non turbo 2.8,

But I am also looking at the 4.2 models, can anyone confirm are these turbo, or naturally aspirated :?:
I have come across one that states it is 320bhp, 99/T
But looking at the various threads on this site, it seems these should be about 350bhp

Please help, Thanks everyone

Kevin :D

the B6 and B7 V8's are all non turbo with around 340bhp, the earlier B5 models are 2.7 bi-turbo, they were made between '97 and '01 and came as standard with 265bhp but can easily be remapped to around 320 for relatively little cost. all S models are Quattro

Welcome to the site.

The main index shows which models are turbo'd....
http://www.rs246.com/modules.php?op=mod ... file=index

Many of the non S and RS models feature turbos and/or 4 wheel drive too - always designated by a "T" ..e.g. Audi A3 1.8T and will be badged "Quattro" if 4WD . Guess you won't be looking at one of those though! I'm pretty sure they don't do anything above 2 litre in a petrol turbo version unless it is an S or RS though...but I may be wrong.

Dave seems to be telling you about S4s only here.

RS more powerful again. The 2.7T I think 380BHP stock and the newer NA V8 414BHP.

Hey Paul, aren't you forgetting the A6 2.7BiTurbo ;-) (also chippable to 320Bhp for peanuts - ish).

What size shell are you after Kevin? A4 or A6 Avant? The B5 S4 is a gem - the engine has LOADS of potential hence why it is so good in the A6 too. Bit limited on the space, but handles better than the A6. Did you want an Allroad for the muddy dog walking parks?

...I did say I may be wrong. Obvioulsy I have little product knowledge outside of the S/RS sphere.

Now I am slightly confused as the car I am looking at, is an A6 4.2 AVANT Quattro, 99 reg, and he states it is 320bhp,

So its not a 2.7T thats been chipped to 320 is it ????

Therefore does this model have a turbo ? (I'm just thinking with a turbo model the tuning possibilities are a lot more  )

Also if the non turbo 4.2 V8 are 340bhp, what general mods can you do? and what power gains are achievable?

Sorry for all the questions I just want a good base car should I start to want more power, especially when I look at the MRC website (drooling)

oooops you're right of course Graham, bit of S4 target fixation there. that particulat A6 isn't a turbo, i think they're around 300bhp as standard.

Kevin - you need to decide on size of car to go for and how much of a budget split you have between car/mods.

A6 is great, A4 is great, one is smaller though. You need to make that call and start from there.

RE tuning, a turbo motor will always be more fun to tune and the 2.7 is a gem and MRC do silly and frankly, stupid things with it.

The V8 is glorious, but outside of a remap you are into big money to do anything. As an example and ball park figures:

the V8 S4 will cost about £10k for an extra 100bhp (via supercharger)
the V8 RS4 will cost about £15k for an extra 100bhp (via supercharger)

the 2.7 motor is mental, £10k will buy you an extra 250bhp approx. But with the 2.7, it is incremental, you can do it in bits. With the V8's, by-and-large you only have one step so you'll visited heavily by the money bugger in one go.

On the other hand the RS6 is a V8 Turbo, you can play with that and not sure what is available outside of a remap.

The flip side of all this is the cost of the 2.7's is likely to be a lot less. The V8 S4 and RS6 (also V8) are going to be similiar and high spec/low mileage RS6's (V8) and V8 RS4 are going to cost the most.

Have a look at what size of car you want, how much you want to spend on car and then mods and take it from there....

There's plenty of guys on here to guide you through.

Thankyou for that reply its starting to clear my mind a bit,
And thanks to the other replies

My ideal monster that I would like to end up with would be an estate/four wheel drive/ and around 400 to 450 bhp.

I need it for the kids and dog one day then for myself another

I have only a budget of upto £10,000, so buying say a 2.7T seems a good place to start,
Then I can start the rocky road of modding as you say bit by bit,
Exhaust/turbos/injectors/intercoolers/remap etc etc.

Whereas the V8 would have to be modded in one hit?

Can you just confirm are the pistons and rods forged in the Audi's already?

You could also throw the 2.7t allroad into the mix as well

Yep, all comes back A4 or A6 (or allroad).

The non 'S' model 4.2 V8 Audi are in a lower state of tune than the B6/B7 S4 (340) or the B7 RS4 (414...). The A6 4.2 & A8 4.2 are 300-320 depending on the age, the S8 is also 320. All the 4.2 V8s (except the RS6 !) are NA.

Personally, i would go for an S4 avant, you can pick a nice 1 up for 8k, then you have 2k for brakes and anti rollbars ready for the high power!! Then once you save more dosh, k04's, injectors, intecooler(s),clutch, fuelpump and remap! The b5 s4 rods are good for 500 bhp. With the above setup you should be reaching 420bhp-450bhp depending on what injectors, incooler(s) you go for etc.!!! Hope that helps.
