I bought a 2nd hand keyfob and blank keyblade of eBay with while back as I only got a single key with the car.

Just pulled the fobs apart and discovered that they both have different partnumbers.

My original 'working' keyfob is 4D0 837 231
My new additional keyfob is 8Z0 837 231
both state they are on the same 433.92Mhz freq.

Does anyone know if the 8Z0 fob will work with my car, as I dont want to risk screwing things up with the only working one!

So long as it's the right frequency and has 3 buttons, I would say that it would be OK. Why don't you try pairing it to the central locking to see if that works before you go to the expense of taking it down to the dealers to code to your ECU?

Are they both 3 button items?

If so, then like Jarv has said, get them working just for the central locking to see if it will function, and only then get it coded.

remote is dead easy to do, press the unlock button then unlock the car with the existing key, that'll prove to the alarm that it's an "allowed" remote. you'll have to turn the ignition on then otherwise the alarm will sound. after that the remote should work, you can then spend some more cash getting it cut and the immobiliser chip paired with the car.

I thought the additional keyfob had to have the keyblade cut before synching, as one of the tasks in the 'mating' sequence is to mechanically lock the door with it.

Is your method a working shortcut to the procedure below?

you just unlock the door with your existing key, that way you can check the remote will work without going to the expense of getting it cut only to find out that the remote is buggered or incompatable. i managed to get the wifes Passat remote to unlock my S4 just by pairing it as above
