Having decided on selling my RS4 B5 (after a health check at MRC)need to think about a replacement !

thinking of something that'll do 30mpg + and rapid (not RS rapid tho  ) and not too big (ie smaller than 5 series). The only two cars I can think of that have the space too are

VW mkV golf GTI or 330d Msport touring

budget is max £20k and has to be still in warranty

cheers

Al

Both cars a good proposition.

We have a Mk5 GTI in the household, and I reckon you'll love it. Everyone I know who has a Mk5 GTI, always loves it. As a package for a car, you can't go wrong, and there's not much out there that can do it better; space, value, performance, looks, etc.

For £20k you'll easily pick one up, and plus with warranty as requested.

Not too sure on the 330d, as I have no direct experience. But again a great car, and good performance, especially for a diesel. But do you really need a diesel....will you be doing lots of mileage? The GTI will give 30mpg or so, and perform really well.

I bought a MkV Golf GTi. But couldn't sell the RS4 so have both cars.

VW dealers are not a patch on Audi dealers, everything is a bl**dy problem so far...I think they all need to spend time in an Audi dealership to learn what Custoemr Service is all about.

The Golf GTi ain't a patch on the RS4 in so may ways but it is a reasonable all-round car. I only get 29.3 mpg whereas the RS4 records 21.6 for the same series of journeys, but this would depend on how you drive it of course. It was so strange getting into teh Golf after the RS4, front wheel drive, understeer, no power, girly clutch and brakes so over-assisted as to be almost dangerous.

20g should get you a decent one - try trawiling the VW website - tehre are quite a few out there - just be picky and be prepared to wait if yo uwant something a little out of the ordinary. Don't bother with the e-mail alert service as you'll get notified of a car long after it appears and it'll probably by that time. I used to log on every day to check for the particular car I wanted.

I "considered" a 335d but the D word is banned in our household so that was that.

Nissan Stagea. It's a Skyline, with an estate car body. Cheap as hell, but it's got some impressive grunt :)
