My first poll... Speed...

Simple one really, considering the cars on this forum would cruise along effortlessly at 130mph. What do you consider to be a safe legal speed limit for our motorways to be set at?

While I would of course like to see it higher ideally, I'm not so sure the standard of some cars, not mention the drivers are up to it.

I suppose I'd like a higher limit, perhaps 90 with highway coding stating less for rain or other visibility/grip affecting conditions and Police enforcing no tailgating, good lane discipline and otherwise safe driving as oppossed to being too speed focussed.

NEVER going to happen though.

I agree with Graham.

I think the speed limit should be your IQ rating plus say 50mph. However, that would mean so many people being limited to 49 mph.

Proper lane discipline needs to be encouraged (why not tax people wot stay in the outside or middle lanes...oops sorry I've just given Brown an idea).

lol, you voted the 130 route then ? :D

Also with the amount of modern cars now with modern breaks etc the stopping speed is much shorter. Surely this means we could go a bit faster, conditions of road obviously taken into consideration.

Don't know when the 70 limit was made but I'm sure when it was cars were running break shoes at the front ;)

Going to do a Google search for stopping distance back then and now ;)

The 70 mph limit was introduced in 1961 (ish) when Jaguar brought out the first E-Type. Until then motorways (well there was only the M1) were de-restricted and the first E-Type cracked 150mph (allegedly, and with a slightly modified engine apparently?). So the good old Government of the time (god bless 'em all) brought in the speed limit. So, indeed, drum brakes were fitted all-round in those days with cross-ply tyres.

You're full of info! !

I've been looking for 20 Min's and found ziltch.

So, what is the stopping distance of an RS4 and RS6 at 60/70.

I found it takes 2.6 secs from 62-0 in a '6 but can't find and distance figures

My late brother had an E-Type hence the knowledge...nothing at all to do with me being an old git.

Lol, I actually put 120!!! I have found that 120 is a nice speed to cruise at, anything above that actually requires a lot more concentration, for me anyways … :P

I did type unlimited into the poll settings but it doesnt appear to have listed, I assume that there is a maximum number of list items, or I cocked it up... probably the latter! Good vote results though

I'm totally with this lane discipline thing ! The amount of volvo's, bling grannies who cant see over the steering wheel and bearded female tree huggers sitting in the middle lane, doing 60, drives me completely nuts. I dream of the factory options pack offering coax machine guns and those james Bond rocket things fitted in the front grill  (job for mrc perhaps?) the motorways would be an attractive and better place to be. Why dont they use those big F*** off signs to tell them to keep over to left and stop telling us some out of date info like there was an accident some 3 days ago ?? Apprently if everyone moved over we reduce 60% of all motorway hold ups (fact)..... Of course then we could then push on to a 130mph limit :D

Middle lane hogs....
I'm a firm believer in undertaking...works fine in the USA. (However, apparently so does gun ownership.)
I'd add that sort of MRC upgrade!

Stopping distances may have improved, but reaction speeds won't have changed!

I'm voting 90mph, although over a small distance, eg a couple of junctions, it doesn't make much difference. Ever belted passed some old turd, done a few moves, only to find him roll up along side you 30 seconds later

As for reducing speed limit for road conditions, thats a mine field of grey legal matters argueing over the conditions and if it was safe.
