I think i need a bike

New project imminent that will result me working in the centre of town for a while, years ago i swore that if I ever worked in the city again I would buy a bike, well that time has come Image , so the question is...

I havent been on a bike since I had a nifty fifty field bike that cost me £30 when I was a kid, so I assume I have stuff like a CBT test etc to get me street legal... anything else I need to look out for??

The most important thing though is which bike? I want something friendly, swift yet not a widowmaker... I am Dakar mad and a lanky bugger so something like an enduro bike all-rounder like a BMW F650GS looks good...

Not looking to spend a fortune, so a couple of years old would be ideal.

Anyone??

Supermoto, try a CCM or a KTM 620.
CCMs are good value iro £1500 for a 03 R30, fairly reliable. As fast as you will need around town.
Fit a race pipe so the car drivers hear you coming!

Below was a TT600 I had a few years back real hoot to ride. Fitted the talon supermoto wheels that day.

NICE moto had a few of em myself great fun and easy to fight though traffic as they will go evrywhere fast enough to beat a sportsbike off the line and are very light incase u have a little off n have t pick it up also they crash well as thats wot enduro bikes are built for . very cheap on insurance cheap to run ! but 1st thing you need a license , to ride upto a 125 you legal need to do a cbt which is valid for 2 years , you dont have to do the theory test until you want t do your bigbike test , if i was u id just do a direct access job done no messing or waiting

I agree with k5........................ go for direct access that way your not restricted to what you can ride

Supermoto's are a real hoot around town and as philipwalker said fit a decent pipe so the car drivers can hear you coming

Was travelling back home after a trip to MRC and thought that it would be rude not to call in at the NEC for the bike show.

Was a really good show, the KTM & BMW stands were excellent and they were really helpfull answering my stupid novice questions. Image

There were some superb bikes on display  , but enough about the girls! The motorbikes were great too.

I also met Mick Extanse, an absolute legend of a bloke. He was doing a promo thing trying to raise money for his Dakar entry again... Have total respect for all the Dakar bike riders Image

I was surprised at how cheap some of the new bikes were; I was looking at the KTM 640 and the salesman told me that they retail at £6000, but at this time of year I could get one in stock for £3800 brand new! Because of seasonal demand and the annual change in models :D

The BMW F650GS Dakar was my favourite though, particularly as it looks like if you fell off the thing it would do more damage to the tarmac than the bike, although the risk of having a low-side crash is reduced as you can get ABS on it which might be wise for a first bike.

Checked out the tests also, direct access costs between £450 to £650 depending on how many days you need to pass (4 to 6 days). Also there are loads of off-road schools by Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW etc etc. which sound like a right laugh.

Time to start saving now I think, oh and also to start negotiating with the Mrs as she is hugely anti-bike Image

Don't care about the bikes.....

Call me strange, but I am drawn to the Ohlins front forks on the 749R!
