Could anyone please recommend a vehicle that is capable of towing a small trailer/horsebox that is CHEAP TO INSURE? Purely because a youngster needs to be on the policy with me. Can be old, in fact it needs to be as I only want to spend a few grand on it.

Will something like a Focus Diesel be capable of light load lugging? Dicso reasonable insurance?

Opinions welcome and appreciated.

disco 1.9tdi would pull it no probs, maybe more surefooted than a focus with tow

I read in my manual and you are not supposed to tow for very far at all? Maybe that is just quattros though?

oh no my RS6 won't be towing anything! Looking for another car for the job... Disco's seem to be group 12 ish - bit high I think but I'm no expert

What about something like a Frontera or a Freelander rather than a disco? The Frontera has been out of production for years and will probably be cheap as chips by now. Wouldn't vouch for reliability though...didn't they caome bottom of the JD Power surveys?

The Discovery is the ultimate tow vehicle (unless you are going to spend £££'s) on a new diesel Towrag.
Diesels were 2.5tdi and of course the 4litre V8. We have used both versions to tow rally cars both series 1 and 2. However, probably a bit overkill if you are just towing a small trailer. How much is the maximum weight you need to tow as this is ultimately what is going to affect your purchase?

If you don't need too much space you could look at the 2 door versions of the Fourtrak, early Freelander or Frontera.

Many thanks - Towing is secondary, but I'd like the option to chuck a pile of logs on a trailer for example. General rural life, and I'm thinking of getting a few sheep!

However the big issue is that it has to be suitable for the au pair to drive the kid around in. That way she has the option to back into a supermarket trolley or tree without concern. No problem there, but she's 20, and has no NCB. So I need something with as low a group as possible. Disco's etc may be too high. It will just be the two of us on the policy as my wife is of course imminently to be banned aswell. Women!!

Got your pm. Sounds like the maximum weight you are looking to tow is approx 700kg's - I'm guessing at a 200kg trailer and 500kg load. Virtually any car is cabable of towing this (just look at the towing weights in their manuals) but you probably wouldn't want to do it with anything less than a 1.6 petrol, but I'd prefer something bigger than that.
If you are rural you probably want 4wd. For really cheap insurance you could go a 1.6 daihatsu sportrack and it doesn't matter if that gets backed into a post. Otherwise, just as I suggested before, 2 door Fourtrack, Freelander or Frontera or an old quattro A4 - you may be able to get one of these for £2000 if you hunt around. Better build quality than any of the others suggested!
