Insurance - I don't get it

Post by bobjebb » Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:44 pm

My wife has a car, I have a car, we are inured seperately with two different companies and are named drivers for each others vehicles. She has 4 years no claims, I have 8.

However I need to by a banger that can be dumped at a railway station for a day or two. Easy I thought - pick up something for a couple of grand and insure it for peanuts. Couldn't belive the response I get from insurance companies, basically it will mean I have zero no claims as they are applied to my Audi! So I'm essentially a spotty 17 year old all over again and have to pay a rediculous premium. Am I missing something? That's just stupid!

Surely they should be applied to the individual not the car, the car doesn't drive itself! So I have a 50 grand 500hp car yet I'm a higher risk if I want to buy a fecking 0.35 litre Daihatsu 'Lapin' or whatever they are called. (I really want a Defender) Anyone got any thoughts or ways round this?

Thank you

That's the way it has always historically worked. Many companies - Directline, Admiral Group insurers and some good brokers will now sort you out a policy for 2 cars - with your no claims used on each.

Past: 1998 Agate grey B5 S4 saloon (MRC tuned)

I've been insured for years by different companies in the Admiral Group (Admiral, Bell and Elephant)

They will honour your current no claims on to another car as long as you insure it on the same terms. We've saved hundreds over the last few years with this. All cars are now in my name as my wife even though she had full no claims being a few years younger than me was almost double the cost to insure her car

Elephant will even suspend a policy which has come in usefull this year. I've sold one car, suspended the policy and will bring it back online when one of our other cars insurance runs out in about a months time. Of the 3 companies above only Elephant do this. Though they do charge admin for policy changes. Bell didn't.

The great thing with the Admiral policies is that after the first year of running the second policy you can move the no claims to another company :)

Sometime sit is worth speaking to a supervisor at teh call centre to encourage them to see sense. OK there is a potential risk that BOTH cars could be stolen but there is no risk at all of you crashing both cars at the same time.

I had an issue with my insurers (Elephant) (oh look tehre's an elephant advert on the side of the forum today!!) in that they wanted to laod my policy because my other half was unemeployed...."cos that's the way it is sir". Well I argued that she has as much access to my car as she had when she was employed because I am the main driver and use it daily.they accepted and agreed not to load the policy. The moral of the story is that it's worth having a word with some one with at least 3 brain cells between their ears rather than the usual spotty oik on the phone..."the computer says 'no'.......

Actually Paul that's exactly what I did. I first was answered by someone who clearly just goes to work, reads off a script and goes home. So I hung up on him.

Tried again and got someone I could actually have a chat with. He said the RS6 was one of his favourite cars so we were on the right wavelength from the off. The upshot of the conversation was, "don't worry, just call me back when you're decided on a car, and we'll sort out some no claims for you..."

Thanks, Bob.
