Your all Torque...

Post by SteveH » Tue Jun 13, 2006 7:54 pm

Could anyone shed any light on the difference between Nm and lb-ft, both quoted as vehicle torque figures? (in a similar manner between PS & BHP or completely different??)

Isn't it like comparing kgs with lbs? Just two different ways of measuring the same thing!

RS7 FL best car I've owned. No faith in turbo oil screen (turbos failing) or sticking oil scraper ring causing missfires.
F10 M5 LCI still no rear grip lol
S7 black Edition Too big and heavy
S3 8V FL DSG 310ps, road noise is a joke
RS3 8P Rubbish
C7 RS6 Fantastic car but missed playing
GTR R35 800bhp, too extreme, crazy fast though
911 Turbo Remapped. Hated it
F10 M5, awesome but no rear grip
RS6 V10 700BHP crazy
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 600bhp

I read this somewhere; -

Torque = force x distance

English units of torque are pound-inches (lb/in) or pound-feet (lb/ft).

the SI unit (international measurement) is the Newton-meter (Nm).

Torque counts contain a distance and force. To calc torque multiply force by distance from the center. A car engine creates torque and uses it to spin the crankshaft. This creates torque by applying force at a distance.

HP = 1.36 kW

torque lb/ft = NM/1.36

1 n m = O.74 ib/ft

So NM shows as being higher figure than lbs............ hence why the car industry is quoting NM?

Next you will have us converting to PS instead of BHP............ :biggrin2: Being sort of British, can we not stick to English measures.......... or is that not EU compliant......... :bigblink:

I've got a sad Excel spreadsheet that does the conversions for you. Spose I could post it in the downloads section???

300lbs/ft is near as damn it 400NM which is the torque of a standard B5 S4 - I always remember that and beacuse the numbers are quite nice it makes other calculations fairly intuitive.
