May well be changing my plans next year so could have around 25k to spend on a car.
What would you buy? Does not have to be audi (prob will be though) but needs to be very fast or easy to make very fast.
I have 3 kids and 2 dogs and this will be my only car. It will do the school run etc
cheers

Had similar thoughts myself and considered:
E46 M3
B5 RS4
Monaro (can be very quick and sound awesome but onyl takes two in the back - big seats though)

agree monaro is too much money for what is essentially cheap muscle
go for the b5 rs4, its avant, 380hp out of the box, audi, and potential for more , sounds made for the job
was just looking at ebay theres a high miler for under £20k don't know how legit it is obviously its ebay..

As Harry said it is a no brainer really. My only prob is the S4 does not have much leg room in the back so the RS4 will be the same. There is no way I can afford an RS6.
The BM very nice car but it is a saloon no good for the dogs same for the Monaro.
I just though someone would have suggested something I have not thought of but looks like I need to shorten my kids legs somehow

What about an E39 M5 - get a low mileage 2003 for that. 4 door but no avants so youll have to squeeze the dogs in the glovebox
Lot of car for your money - and goes like

off a shovel

An S6 Avant Paul more room than a 4, exclusive and tuneable. An mint older one will come in 10-15k leaving some wedge for mods/upgrades ir required or throw it all at a newer version.

How about an A3 sportback quattro 2.0T - they have more leg room than the B5 A4. You may want to check out the B6 S4 too!

I had the same dilemma just over two years ago.
It's clearly obvious that I solved my dilemma.

How about this : VolvoV70 2.5 R 5d Turbo (04) 0-60 mph: 5.7 s
Power Output: 300 bhp Torque: 400 Nm Torque: 295 lb/ft Top Speed: 155 mph
Looking at around £20-22k and im sure you could chip it to be as fast, if not faster than the police with the cash left over!
Not quite an Audi, but it is fast, not bad fuel consumption and its an estate so you can fit the dogs as well as the kids in. Maybe worth a thought?

New V8 Mustang would be on my list too - basically it would have to sound 'good' whatever it was
Also regarding Monaro being a 'vauxhall', one of the neighbours who has a collection of Yank cars also has the Monaro (cos it has the same engine as the yank cars) and its alright, and the resale thing, well you can get them for 17-20k.

yank cars are ok, but you will miss the agility and refinement of a euro, though the gap is less than it was, i have a 20 year old one that i cruise in over the weekends which is most comfortable car i have ever had and has a fun attitude but i have to hold the speed down on corners compared to audi's, so purely a cruiser and straight line machine, newer ones are said to be better but chassis tuning is way behind euro's
