Have someone interested in my car, potentially wants to bring a bankers draft down to me (from Leeds so a long trip) this week.
Question, What is the best way to sort out my private plate? (which I want to keep) Can I sell the car as it is? Or does it have to be done before?
Sorry for dumb ass question but I'm crap at administration. Any advice, in lamens terms, much appreciated.

Having it off the car before you sell is always better (no arguments about ownership of the plate etc). If you go to your local Driver licensing centre they do it while you wait, and then your new purchaser only has to insure it once. Take a photocopy of your logbook before you go as they keep it (takes about two weeks for the new one to come through)
Hope the deal goes through for you

As far as i understand it. Get your plate put on retention and dvla will give you an age related plate for your car.

Get it off your car before you sell it if you can.
Once the sale has been done then the new owner has the rights to the plate and you effectively loose ownership at that point. If the new owner decides afterwards not to let the plate go then he is quite within his rights to do so as you sold it on the car still.
it should take no more tahn a few days to put it on retention.

Crap, mine was off the car same day, have you a local licensing centre you can visit personally?
Ooop's nearly forgot, you need to take a cheque for £105 with you. Then visit Halford's on the way home for the new plates

Thanks KC, yea been there when I got the number originally, nice place... Strange because I called DVLA back for a second opinion, got the same response, that it wasn't an over the counter service. So as a result I've agreed with the buyer coming on Wednesday that when I get my new car, he'll do a transfer for me. I know there's a bit of trust involved, but it isn't really a cherished plate and not expensive, nor does he want it either. It was just to hide the age of the car! I'll try them again though.
