where would i be able to get my hands on a cable the connects from the diagnostics port of vag cars to a laptop or to a pda

Quite! The main thing', to check is that the cable you buy implements all the disgnostics lines which are required for your car. All of the more recent Audis require two 'K lines and the 'L' line. These cables are often referred to as 'dual-K' or 'KKL'. The very recent cars require CAN bus connectivity. I think that all cables currently available from Ross Tech include the full set of connections.philipwalker wrote:As peter has suggested
The e-bay one will connect but will it work correctly using the vag com programe??
Yes. You can use the Ross Tech software in 'freeware' mode, but this does have limited functionality. To gain full operation, you would need to pay the $99 licence/registration fee. All current Ross Tech cables include the 'dongle' which automatically provides full software functionality.I think you only get a limited use with the non-dongle cables.
Got mine from him 3years ago - had to cut it down a lot to make it fit in the S4, as the connector is a tight fit - he may have sorted this now, but worth checking first.Try skpang I got an ODBII lead from him, worked fine think it was £40 or so quids.
