Repairing nailed tyre-Is it safe for high performance tyres?

Bummer - Brand new set of Toyos on my RS4 last month. Came out this morning to find one of the rears flat. Found a nail in it.

I know they can repair nailed tubeless tyres with a wedged shaped rubber bung pushed from the inside out and its glued. Or perhaps a tube?

I'd have no probs with this on a tractor or 4x4 but uneasy about my RS4. Given the speed and torque this baby can put out. I'm thinking you don't know what its done to the wire/mesh internals of the tyre.

Anyone got any experience or thoughts on this? :?

As long as it isn't to near to the sides should be fine. had one repaired on my S4.

I've had bike tyres repaired and they've been fine...never had a problem after the repair - even at some scary speeds (not on a public road of course)...

Yeah, I'd do it. Watched them do one once, they use a drill to create a cone for the plug to go in (with glue), then they put a patch over it on the inside too. Probably the strongest part of the tyre.

Leave it on the back.

No Tubes.

iirc the maximum size hole they can repair using this method is 6mm which is quite big. If they thought it was unsafe they wouldn't fix it for you, and why they wont touch a hole near the side wall or the tyres shoulder.

Cheers guys. The nail is well away from the side wall. I'll look into it today.

TT's right, tyre fitters won't repair unless it's safe to do so. IIRC the unsafe area is the 25% nearest the tyre wall.

Got the tyre repaired today by Kwik Fit. 15 min job and no charge.
:jump_clap:
I watched what they did and I feel confident it's a good repair.

I'm glad I fitted the spare RS4 wheel tho. as they told me if I'd filled the tyre with the Audi sealing gunk, they wouldn't have repaired the tyre as they can't get their patch/bung combo to stick to the tyre wall after that gunk has been on it - So take note!

Not always the case... My tyre guy preps the area with a high speed wire brush.

Yeah that's what I though. Surely they just have a little bit more cleaning/prep of the rubber. I agree with you Phil. Its a lame excuse on thier part.

On reflection they weren't the sharpest tools in the box. They took the tyre off the rim from the outside of the rim. When I asked them about this they stopped and fecked about for long enough with a piece of plastic so they didn't damage the paint work and after all that they still attempted to put the tyre back on the rim from the outside. They then changed to the inside when they spotted me watching them. All this from guys that do this day in day out :?
