Speed limit

This is not a dig at anyone......

I'm interested to know where your personal 'Speed Limit' ie the speed on the public road that, above which, your not prepared to travel (or the bl**dy H*ll this is a bit fast I'll slow down before I'm nicked or crash). I've always thought that 85-90 on the motorway is OK, over a ton very briefly but never much more than that.

If the motorways were less crowded, in better condition and wider, then i'd say unlimited in the right weather conditions.

It is one of those things.........speed suitable to the weather and the conditions, I tend to find my and the car's natural cruising speed is 90 mph, but have been known to venture well north of that figure by some way, especially M6 northern part in the dead of night with nothing else on the road. Covering 40K miles plus a year and usually in the tank, which seems to attract lane 3 hugging BMW drivers, it is rare that you can maintain 80 for any period of time these days.

I voted 110, but that's really rare for me. Generally my rule is never over 100. However I frequently cruise the motorway at about 95, especially when lots of other cars are doing the same...

Voted for my usual speed of 90mph though normally just below 100.

However there are occasions where the speed is sky high, or below 20mph, all depends on the conditions. There are timese when 150mhp is safe!

Stick to speed limit when posted. Motorway under a ton. Clean license, and what to try and keep it that way.

I cruise at about 95ish, but this does depend on coditions and traffic density.
I have been known to double the speed limit a few times, especially in moments of boredom, other to$$ers trying it on, late for emmerdale, etc

Anything up to 150 is fair game given the right conditions (so that is the speed I voted for).

If you consistently drive at a given speed (say 95mph) you become accustomed to it, and it no longer seems 'fast'. I do find that travelling at this speed I remain allert, whereas at 70mph I become bored, switch off / daydream, and so am probably more of a liability as a result.

Just came back from Lemans, where the Mway speed is 130kph (~82mph). I was following another cars, so we stuck at about 85mph all the way, and were still getting regularly overtaken.

I think the limit in the UK should be raised to match the rest of europe, but also post a different speed for wet conditions just as they do.

two speed fines in 20years of driving (1st overtook unmarked car in national limit, 2nd fixed camera), and no accidents. Not a bad average imo.

I wouldn't cruise at above 90 although the odd lapse into triple figures does still happen. A friend of mine got a 2 month ban and £400 fine for 111mph on the M1 near j13 at 0030 hours with nothing on the road!

With the exception of cameras which are indiscriminate I think a lot of it is down to perception. Its a risk to be the fastest car on any bit of road at any given time. Speed is not dangerous, its inappropriate use of speed which is the problem. Unfortunately the government won't / can't trust us to be grown up about it and enforces a nanny state 70mph.

Sorry 2 let you all down but i find it very hard 2 stick to the limit , Dont get me wrong , i dont drive like a w---er . I just love 2 drive a nice car that will do it well & safely . A time & a place & all that !! On the motor way 95 - 110 every day . I sat @ 70mph & found i was the slowest car . How many of us take them 2 the max ?? We all spend lots of time & money on improving a 155mph car . why not try it now & again. G

I have no objection to anyone one max'ing out their car in the right conditions. My arguement would be that the 'right conditions' on UK roads is a very unusual event as our motorway network was never designed for 150mph +.

You should be aware that if you are caught speeding above 140mph ie twice the legal speed limit, you face a substantial fine, lose of license for years and at least 1 month in prison.

Seems that my 80-85 with occasional 90 fits in, most of my motorway driving these days is M4 M25 A1M and 80 around some of these drivers seems quite fast enough !
Trouble is there is no test for motorway driving,the standard test is too easy and a fair number of drivers look but do not SEE how fast others may be going ( even illegally). Still that's your point really isn't it Jeff?

I'm seven months off from a clean licence for 40 years ( yes I'm that old !!) and I would like to make it - besides which you do not seem to make up worthwhile amounts of time for some of the risks.
