What a laugh today!!!
Giving my friend a lift in the Porker from Edinburgh to Newcastle on A1 today when I get some guy driving up my ass at 85/90 wanting a take on! I laughed it off for about 10min because I could see it being a waste of time as he was driving a Fiat 20v Turbo, anyway he kept on being bloody anoying so something had to be done! Floored it and took off like a rocket and before I knew it I was at 178mph on the clock with him being a small dot in my mirror, I decided to slow down to about 90 as I thought enough was enough and didn't want to be a complete idiot and lose my licence (also prooved my point!) anyway about 30sec later he comes past me doing about 140+ and headed off into the distance, about another 30sec down the road we approached him at the side of the road with about 300 yards of skid marks and smoke everywhere (you guessed it!) He only gone and drove the thing so hard that he seized up, must have been doing a stupid speed trying to keep up with me before!!! Me and my mate were in stitches as we drove past him he was looking at me with fire in his eyes! Anyway it was to get funnier as on the way back (flying visit in Newcastle) we thought we would still see him on the other side of the road, but he wasn't there! as we continued our journey (traffic in front so bloody slow) we were busy chatting about what happened and wondered where he was! (my mate suddenly burst out laughing!) he was on a recovery vehicle exactly in front of us!!! (couldn't believe it!) anyway we overtakin' the recovery vehicle and waved out the sunroof of the car to the owner of the Fiat who was sitting in the Passenger seat! He was so pissed at us! what a laugh though.
Got the pics of his car on the recovery vehicle, post them later!

Not as funny as yours, but I was coming home from work in the new truck, rumbling along at 65 mph minding my own business, when in my mirror, I noticed a Corsa closing rather rapidly behind me, put my foot down a bit, which in a new TDV6 is nothing exciting, and at about 80 the Corsa passed me like I was stood still, fast was not the word for it, the gap he opened was amazing. About three miles further down the road, there were several hundred feet of skid marks and a hole in the hedge and a blue Corsa parked in the field beyond............ Stopped to make sure he was OK and apart from a bit of damage to the front of the car and a damaged radiator all was OK. Transpires he had put a 16V GSI engine into the thing, but had not upgraded anything else from the original 1.2 lt car and ran out of road and brakes

I would have stopped if he had an accident, but he was so bloody sure of himself and nearly kissing my bumper at high speeds (basically being a dick!)

LOL!
That is a scenario I only ever dream of - someone wrecking their car just to drive faster than you!

Also on the line of funny driving stories...
Many years ago driving in Germany (family summer holiday), we were overtaken in by a Ferrari with it's roof down/off. I remember noticing that the driver was a middle-aged man, and his passenger was a young and very attractive woman.
A short while later we took an exit, and noticed that the road was damp such that it may have had a shower. We also saw the Ferarri again - off the road by the crash barrier. It looked like it had spun and hit the barrier on all 4 sides. Furthermore it must have only just happened as the driver and passenger were still in the car, with shocked expressions on their faces.
The funny thing was that the middle-aged driver was completely bald, but we were certain he has a full head of hair when he overtook us. So was the woman shocked at the accident or about his wig...?

And I take it you always stick to doing the national speed limit do you?jeffw wrote:I was just clarifiing who Tombs mean't.....
In answer to your question it could be.....A1.....178MPH....public forum....but I understand that it's a fictional story as no one would admit to doing almost 3 x the legal speed limit on an A Road....would they....?
Shhhh! you can tell me!
I was looking at your previous posts

Yip cool!
To be honest Jeff I was doing this speed for about 15/20 sec tops on a straight road with nothing in front (when I floored it!) and when I noticed I was approaching cars rapidly I said this was enough (plus I didn't want to lose my licence). When I travel down South on a regular basis (every 2/3 weeks) I usually sit at 95/100 with the Radar detector on and keep a good look out just incase!
I honestly don't make a habit of driving at silly speeds and probably will never do that again!!!
It gave my ego a little boost and also pissed that guy off that's all! (I actually tried so hard to ignore him!)

If (and it's a big if) you had been clocked at that speed you would have been the fastest 'speeder' ever prosocuted and you would have been banned for 4 years, required to retake your driving test, had lots of publicity and you would have had a custodial sentence (probable 3-4 months)......plus what ever effect all of that would have had on your future insurance premium, employment and relationships.
If you had hit someone/something we wouldn't have been having this conversation....
Could have been an 'expensive' ego boost.

I knew you would eventually get your 2p worth and have a bit of a pop!!!
I'm sure if you ask some of the guys on here who are in my opinion mature and experienced drivers (no boy racers) that they have some point in time (even once) hit a silly speed on the road! (mine was the other day!)
I broke the speed limit (yes, very fast!) but so have you!
If you check your poll 7 drivers have logged and 6 are above 110, go and have a pop at them!
(should have done Poll "What's the fastest you have ever been")
Maybe you should change your car to a Nissan Micra!!!
End of Story!
Any chance of a mod locking this thread!

Easy now fellas......... this conversation could be had on one of the speed forums...... about the same level of response as I would expect form them
Lets face it, there are loads of us who let rip every now and then, I know I got pissed off with a <beep> in a BMW on the M5 one day and burried the Uber panzer estate, when I looked at the speedo, I was doing well in excess of 150, the motor way was empty, the road was dry and there was no fog, low sunlight or bridges and on-ramps........
Sh*t happens and when it does it is about control and restraint, no one is going to do 170 on british roads for any length of time.
