Searching for info on the Torsen 4WD system I stumbled upon this:
The first ever permanent 4WD car was built neither in Germany nor in the US. It was built right here in West Bromwich:

A thing of pure pure beauty but just too far ahead of its time.
Who built the first permanent 4WD Car?

er no, the first 4 wheel drive car was built at the end of the nineteenth century. A bit closer to today was the Lotus Elite with a Fergusson Formula drive train and a sort of pre-selector gearbox.
Jensen took the FF system and ran with it, another where are they now company, unfortunately.

It was the first four wheel drive car, but the Audi ur-quattro was the first to use an intigrated system, the jensen used a standard gearbox and seperate transfer box, the Audi car was the first to have gearbox and diffs in one unit, without transfer shafts........the Iltis was the first vehicle to run this system.........German Army vehicle to the unknowing, similar to Willys Jeep
