Road Angel and the like
Road Angel and the like
Ayup folks,
Whilst I await funding for my new toy (REALLY want an RS4!!!), I am contemplating what I'll be like driving one...
This brings to mind the potential for LOTS of points for being a bit enthusiatic with the accelerator.
Any of you use a Road Angel or anything similar? If so, what would you personally recommend buying please? Be great if you had an indication of what it would cost too please? Lots of detectors about, but I have heard mixed reports about how good they actually are.
Cheers
Dan

Any idea if they work with the heat reflective glass on the new S4's? I've heard that it stops them working reliably?

Had my road Angel for over a year now, wouldn't leave home with out it.
PS: the laser detectors on them are excellent too, picked up one or two lasers from cars sitting on bridges from over a mile away.

The Snooper S4 Neo.....
Up until this point I've been very happy with the performance of the Snooper S4 - the GPS appears very accurate and all Truvelo/Gatso cameras have been spotted with ease.
I say until this point as I've just encountered my first 'mobile camera' unit.
On the way between the M4 and Maidenhead there is a stretch of 40mph dual carraigeway and today there was a mobile camera van sitting on the 'to' Maidenhead side of the road. Doing 40mph like a good boy I passed the van, and no alert from the Snooper.
I thought this a bit odd, so went around the roundabout, back up the other carraigeway, took a right and headed for the van again - again nothing from the Snooper.
3rd time lucky ? I went around again, this time stopping and cleaning my windscreen to make sure the sensor had a clear view. Nothing. Not a sausage.
4th time around, I actually stopped, parked up and went to chat to the officer. Very nice chap - Martin from Thames Valley Police invited me into the van for a guided tour and explaination of why my 'detector' doesn't stand a hope of detecting the laser used.
The camera/laser combo connected to a recorder really is a dot that he aims at cars - the laser is 'open' for less than a second then closed again, in that time he's clocked your speed. He can even print out the ones he likes there and then ! He doesn't aim anywhere near the detector - usually at the front number plate and gets the return and reading in literally one second.
He told me that occasionally they 'play' with drivers - the scope/display is so clear and the zoom so good he can see if you've got a detector and can 'ping' it for fun! Of course thats after he's already taken a reading !
Then came the bombshell.
As he was showing me how the readings were taken on the cars coming towards us on our side of the carraigeway, he just aimed the thing left and started clocking people on the OTHER side of the carraigeway going AWAY from us !! I didn't know this worked ? I thought the police laser equipment only got you coming towards the unit - but this definitley worked for vehicles traveling away....
It then occured to me that whilst testing out the Snooper, I'd been doing 40mph going towards him but on the loop back to the start I'd been making good progress - so there is the chance he's got me 3 times going away from him on each of my 'test' laps!!!! arrrghhhh!! I did mention this to him but he said he didn't think he'd caught a blue Golf that day - but perhaps he was just being nice !!
Anyway I've got a nervous 14 or so days ahead of me, and I'm also about to ring Snooper to see what they have to say about the matter.
A bit worring
i've got the older S5 R and i had the same passed a mobile unit and no alarm went off i think i'll be changing brands next time i get a detector

I use Neo6 in RS and find it works well once I orted out the download issues........ did save my backend a few times but also triggered at every camera in the country even when not on, Have 996R in daily hack and it does know the difference although it will not pick up Truvelo. Have since fitted Origin Blue 2 to Rangey and it does what it says on the box, just need to find out where to get the optional jammer from

If anyone is interested, I have a TALEX unit for sale on RS246

I have the S4 neo, without the "R" bit. Works really well, but have always been worried about mobile cameras. it is advertised as a unit that detects ALL fixed and mobile cameras, so I've never understood what the extra hardware you install behind the grill would be for?? Is there actually a detector on the market that truely pics up mobile radar/laser? I'd be interested in upgrading if anyone had some info. In terms of of basic detection, I've tried Road Angel and Snooper S4 and prefered the latter, found it more acurate for Gatso, but just my opinion..
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).
Land Rover Defender. Not as nippy.
Back with C6 RS6
And again C7 RS6

It's well known that the 'laser' element of radar detectors are next to useless - even with external sensors mounted in the front grille as per the S4 Neo, you don't get an awful amount of time to react - you're better off changing lanes quickly (only if you are fully aware of other road users) than braking, as they can't track you that easily. The police generally target the front number plate, therefore windscreen detectors are not much good. Some GPS databases contain the locations of mobile cameras - as crazy as it seems, they are published in advance and are generally the same sections of roads. Bear in mind that most cops aren't remotely technical and will therefore only tell you what they've been told/read - theya re bound to say to mr public that it's very easy to get catch you. aren't they? I'm sure I've read somewhere that they need to track you for more than a second to get a 'qualifying' reading.
Taking on board the need for mobile notifcation, this is what the TALEX unit has over the others that reply on lazer detection - the TALEX guys have through their camera survey team (all ex traffic cops I understand) identified and included mobile sites in their database to pre-warn you as opposed to let you know as you are detected.

When I got blasted by lazer, the B2 triggered but it was at the same time as he was aiming and pointing. Hit brakes and obviously reduced my speed, his target was my windscreen which was the only visible part of the car as the car infront was blocking the plate..... only the later shots showed the plate and me sat at the wheel
