Windscreen chips..

Post by DaveP » Thu Sep 23, 2004 2:42 pm

Anyone had a chip repaired in their windscreen ??

Managed to pick one up the other day, need to get it fixed before it gets any worse...

Any idea how much it costs ? - is it visible after it's been done?

Yes :(
My RS6 acquired a chip, courtesy of a passing Micra, when it was less than a week old.

I believe that a repair is always free on the windscreen cover section of your policy. Whether the chip is visible or not, depends on the nature of the damage. On mine, it definitely is still visible, but it's better with the repair than it was before. Also, as you infer, the repair does reduce the chances of the damage getting worse.

My father's 1958 Rambler acquired a small chip right in front of the steering wheel, sometime in the 70s - my father was quite upset, but that was nothing compared to his dismay when he came out next morning, after a frosty night, to find the chip had extended to an 8" long split. The auto glass suppliers didn't seem to be particularly helpful in sourcing a new screen! The screen still had the split when my dad sold the car in 1983. On a previous occasion when the screen needed replacing, in 1961 after a horse jumped on the car, it took several weeks for the replacement to be shipped from the states - and the first one arrived broken!

If you use Rain X the widscreen can't be repaired. Personally I would get a new one... I think I've had 4 now!!

If you claim off the insurance, does it invalidate your no claims bonus?

No - generally windscreen claims don't count.
