Sainsbury Petrol Can it make that much difference?
Sainsbury Petrol Can it make that much difference?
2 Days ago I had to put some Sainsbury Petrol ( super ) in my S4. The BP station was in darkness ( still don't know why ) and the nearest other station was 10+ miles away in the wrong direction AND my car said 15 miles ( I'm never sure about those things and don't want to run out for a number of reasons ) .. anyway ..
After putting in just £10 worth and driving home and then back to work the next day, I notice a massive loss of power .. At the time I had forgotten about the trip to sainsburys and was putting it down to engine problems and all sorts of bad news ...
Last night I remember the visit and went to Shell and filled up with the normal Optimax and "Here we go ... " back to normal ...
Was it my imagination, or does the cheap supermarket petrol have that much of an impact on high performance cars ??
If it's not too boring a question .. has any one found the same etc ..
Cheers
Wayne

Darren (Wombat on here) had the exactly same thing with his new V8 S4....
I've had supermarket unleaded in mine (old S4), I can notice a difference, but it's not drastically slower - I notice the smoothness (or lack of) more than the power.
Maybe the V8 is a bit more picky?

Can't say I've had the same experience really. My V8 runs OK on super from Sainsburys (Liphook!) but I just **feel** it runs better on Esso or BP. Personally, I've never been a fan of Optimax so I haven't put any in the S4 and so I can't compare. Maybe you just got some bad petrol?

i drive a S4 biturbo and find that Sainsbury's Super is just fine. You'll find a thread on the general car chat on Sainsbury's fuel about a month ago or so. (I tried a link but it wouldn't work, bloody computers!)
Re: Sainsbury Petrol Can it make that much difference?
Hi,
as DaveP said I've been amazed by the difference in performance of the V8 S4 depending on which fuel is used. I've experienced mediocre performance with BP Ultimate and great performance with Optimax although fuel consumption does seem to be higher (worse) with the "sporty" Shell product.
For the original comparison I ran two tanks of BP followed by two tanks of Shell. The difference was noticeable immediately.
Last year I tried a similar comparison in my old 1.8T Sport and didn't notice any difference, much the same as the old BiTurbo S4 drivers are reporting.

Tony, I think you should try Shell Optimax, as both Wombat and I notice a massive difference .. If your normal is what I felt with Sainsbury super, you're missing out ..
By the way I'm not a million miles away ( Greatham, No ones ever heard of it .. so I normally put Petersfield ... ) ....
Cheers

Never one to ignore advice, I'll try a couple of tanks of Optimax and report back again in about a week

supermarkets put massive amounts of additives to there petrol,my old boss kept on using tesco on his fuel card to get his points and some free shopping ,then he found it rotted the tank of his brand new shogun and it was sent back to have a new fuel tank!!!after 6 months!!

a few tanks in a week? i hope you do a lot of miles and dont have a crap mpg like me!! I'll try a couple of tanks of Optimax and report back again in about a week
Re: Sainsbury Petrol Can it make that much difference?
I for 1 never buy fuel from Supermarkets.
Then again I only put in Optimax so i'm hardly likely to.

I've never been impressed by Optimax in the past. Well, 3 tanks of Optimax later (I've done a lot of motoring this week) and I'm convinced...no more Sainsbury's fuel for the S4! The car seems more lively and the fuel consumption is better too.

People i can take upto 3 tank full`s of shell optimax as the car`s ECU has to adjust to the better fuel
Give it ago, ive never used anything else in my S3 and am doing the same for my dub.
