supermarket fuel
i know fuel has been discussed here recently, but i was wondering if anyone knows where supermarkets source their petrol from. i recently started using super unleaded from Sainsburys (availability and cost) and i find that it's grat for both performance and economy (miles better than Optimax).
Re: supermarket fuel
Funnily enough I filled up at Waitrose just yesterday, because I had noted on a previous trip while dieseling up that they were selling petrol that they brand as "98". Two Millers in first, advanced the timing a little and she FLIES.
So far so good. What is this 98 they are selling here anyone know?

Re: supermarket fuel
I seem to remember reading that the supermarkets just buy fuel on the open market (whatever that is) so the price is lower but the quality varies.
Re: supermarket fuel
Supermarket fuel has like rank wine and whisky long been just the cheapest crap they could manage to blend to achieve a saleable sample for the UK market... therefore not to be touched with a bargepole.
Waitrose are now selling fuel branded as "98". This is better than Super Plus, and on par with Optimax, and is the only reason I put it in.
The mystery to me then (like DJ above) is from what source doth this fuel cometh?

Re: supermarket fuel
i managed to email Sainsburys the other day about this issue and this is the response i got...
"Thank you for your e-mail.
I am very pleased to be able to tell you that we now comply with the government directive that all unleaded petrol should be ULS. As a result we have now decommissioned the City Petrol pumps in our petrol stations and installed Super Unleaded ones in their place.
Unfortunately we are unable to supply supplier details due to confidentiality agreements.
I hope this helps."
if u guys are saying that the quality is <beep>, then it does make me worry just what harm i'm doing to the engine of my S4 when filling up with this stuff. having said that, what's the alternative? Optimax is a con and rip off, so do we just stick with good old super unleaded from BP/ESSO etc?
Another interesting point is that on the RS6 forum, the guys there were strongly advising AGAINST the use of Optimax since it causes problems with fuel pump blockages along with a few other unpleasantries.

Re: supermarket fuel
have u tried comparing it to standard unleaded? i couldn't find a dot of difference.
Re: supermarket fuel
Still pulling like a train. Advanced the timing a little further tonight and this stuff delivers the goods with absolutely no ecu intervention regarding reigning back the fun. Not that cold an evening either. Obviously the Millers was helping, but subjectively felt as solid as unadulterated VPower.

Re: supermarket fuel
Just while on this topic... the other night when leaving our local asda I noticed it was a bp tanker in the petrol station - any other time it has been an asda branded tanker...???

Re: supermarket fuel
still waiting on Sainsburys, but i tried Bp Ultimate the other day and i have to say i was quite impressed. The car certainly went well on it and it seems to give decent mpg too...
Re: supermarket fuel
I started using optimax in the S3 5 months ago.
Although I've had no problems with the car I personally think this hype about more power is a load of <beep>.
Ive swapped to super unleaded now. The car is no slower and Im getting a lot more MPG'S.
Optimax....ram it.
