Any update on potential RS3?

Post by kante3 » Tue Sep 23, 2003 9:07 pm

The theory goes that our household is currently undergoing a car-change strategy. Wife is changing her A3 1.9 tdi for an A4 Avant 1.9 tdi. Now two avants in one household is one too many and as my RS is due for replacement next year I have the all clear to get myself a 'sports' car. My immediate thought is a Carrera 4S, but then I recently had a look at a new A3 3.2 quattro and it got me thinking, why would I spend 90+ k (Euro) on a Porsche if I could have a (300+ bhp?) Audi for half the price?

So any update on whether or when an RS3 might appear?

See S3 section as there are many posts about this there.... current rumours stand at :-

350bhp 3.2 V6 Bi-turbo!

Expect 2005/6 info!

Cheers

It's gonna be a while yet, assuming it does get the go ahead but it's very unlikely to have much above 300bhp.

Quote from this weeks auto express on thier review of the 3.2 V6:

"Until the V8 S3 arrives next year, this is Audi's civilised hot hatch. Using the 3.2-litre engine from the TT V6, VW Golf R32 and Touareg off-roader, it packs a mighty punch, sprinting from 0-60mph in an impressive 6.4 seconds."

4.2 litre from the S4 would suggest Porsche 911 humbling performance - where do I sign!

This may sound like heresy , but don't you think that the size of these engines is getting a bit out of control for such a small car package?

Surely all that front end weight is going to compromise the handling package.. leading to terminal understeer - even in a haldex package?

This seams the major criticism fired at the Alfa 147 GTA and R32...

I agree - these S3/RS3 stories amuse me. Things might be a little better handling wise with the next 'High Performance' A3 due to the new multi-link independent rear suspension but it will still have a hard job if the front end engine/tranny weight is excessive.

I still think we won't see an S3 that has a higher output than a range topping TT...

Come on Riz, bring it on

The following article comments on the weight of the S4 engine:

Compact engine’s power utilised to the full

"The eight-cylinder engine is only 464 millimetres in length enabling an extremely small engine compartment. To make this compactness possible, Audi engine developers installed a chain drive for camshafts and ancillaries on the engine output side. The V8 engine’s gross weight of just 195 kilograms is as light as the previous generation S4’s twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 engine resulting in major benefits to the weight balance and handling characteristics"

Ok so the current V6 version weighs less that this (by about 30kg) but I believe the size of the engine makes it a strong possibility.

Well with the announcement of a new range topper for the mark 5 Golf series, which looks like being called the R36 due for release Sept 2004 among the many possible powerplants for the RS3 we now have a 3.6 litre V6

Yes its all still rumors and also a early stage. I expect the earliest official announcments of either a RS3 or RS4 1st Qtr 2005.

Having a 3dr RS3 would definately open up yet another high performance limited hatch market. the only other competition could be the Ford RS Cosworth which has been delayed heavly so far.

3.6 V6 Bi-turbo would be good but remember that the 3.2 V6 has 250bhp standard so far in the A3/TT, adding two turbo`s would push this to 300-350bhp possible.

A 3.6 Bi-turbo would definately help on the power front for a RS3 but i feel 300-350bhp seems a logical figure.

The old 4.2 V8 unit has been implanted a A3 a few years back, remember that the new V8 block is alot smaller and lighter.... i V8 RS3 would be most illogical but would really kick the competition out of the market!

Mmmmmmmm FSi turbo engines are also options too.

RS3/Avant 300-350bhp 3.2 V6 Bi-turbo
RS3/Avant 350-400bhp 3.6 V6 Bi-turbo
RS4/Saloon/Avant 450-500bhp 4.2 V8 Bi-turbo
RS6/Saloon/Avant 650bhp ???

Like i said, just rumors for now.......

We can carry on speculating as much as we like and we will do, and at the end of the day its Audi who r gonna make the final decision as to what they are gonna make for the markets and thats not just for the uk but for europe and the states.
Personally i think the 250bhp 'now standrad' in the average ford or cupra is getting a bit ridiclous now. Every other manufacturer is bringing out cars with some serious horses under the bonnet and god knows when they will stop. Small hatches are getting 300bhp and then someone else will make it 330bhp on the new model causing knoc on effects for the whole range, ie Audi
Whats gonna be next after the RS3 ? A new model with a 5L V8 pupming out 600 horsies in its 3 door hatch model ?? NO ? Dont be too hasty to dismiss it !

Anyway over

What makes you guys think there is gonna be a market for a 'Supreme' hot hatch in 2 years time - the way insurance is going and with the current fashion for 200bhp plus small cars, insurance could possiblly kill off this sector just like in the early/mid 90's ...

Sweet dreams..
