High level Brake light

My 3rd brake light has stopped working and I managed to remove it and purchased a new light (non Audi part though) tried to refit this light but no luck, I have tried allsorts but it will not fit and go down behind the rear window although it's only millimeters away.
Is there a knack or a trick to get this fitted?
