Picked up a 64plate rs6 this weekend, absolutely over the moon, its a car I've longed after for years.....

However, just read some posts of breakins for keys etc and feel sick in the stomach I've just put my family at huge risk etc

It's an old car now and with a value of 34k are they really still hot enough on the list to warrent an armed break-in?

Prior to this I had jokingly thought to myself I'd put a note on the backdoor saying where the keys are, as if they have gone to the length of climbing over our side gate then I don't want the risk of worse happening.

We live in a nice enough area but I'm not sure that means much.

It's a button entry car but i still keep it in a faraday box

Prior to this I had a w204 c63 With keyless entry for 15months (again key in the box) and no problems or worries.

Do proper house alarms act as a decent deterant?

Performance cars are always a target to be broken down and sent abroad or to be used in criminal acts-east car to fit a lot of kit (and people) in and get away from the cops in!
Have posted a lot about this in the past but there’s plenty you can do that’s low cost/free with just a bit of thought.
Basically make your vehicle a pain in the ar5e to steal. Put as many layers in as you can (without it being a reverse pain to get in and drive it yourself). Mixture of tech (don’t get too hung up on tech) and physics security. Enough so you don’t live in paranoia basically.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen but like everything you only hear bad things sometimes and that will realistically only be a small percentage of all of the cars in circulation !

Cars are generally stolen for one of 3 reasons:
Joy riding
Break down for parts / resold on (generally abroad)
To be used in other crimes

It is unlikely many people will go through the hassle of stealing one of these to go joy riding.
There is probably still a bit of a market for parts as they are still worth a bit when broken into pieces.
But unfortunately, they still make great getaway cars so they are still targets to be stolen by the very category of thieves you don't wan't breaking into your house. The combination of quattro, big boot, 5 seats and blistering speed make them targets for armed robbers. My neighbours car was stolen a year and half ago then used in a series of armed robberies. There are many more C7's around than C8's so they will naturally still be targets I'm afraid.
You need to just make your one more hassle to steal than the next persons. Park in a garage, use a steering lock, post on the driveway, gate on the driveway, CCTV, house alarm, big dog etc. These won't necessarily stop them but hopefully it will make them look at someone else's car.

I think I will start with a proper house alarm. Shame we had to have our shepard put down a couple of years ago. He would have kept us safe 100%

Re the dog that one was a trained personal protection dog hence the high price

I used to have a normal shepherd too. People used to cross the road to get away from her although she was unlikely to ever do anything

I’ve since had golden retrievers and it is now the other way around, people cross over to stroke her !

That's an insane amount for a dog, although I'm sure it's behaviour is unparalleled.

Our shepard was a rescue who had been stuck in a cage behind a front door from a puppy. So he had it wired into him that unless you were introduced at the door you weren't meant to come in the house. Must admit this was more of a hindrance than benifit pre nice cars. Golden retrievers are lovely dogs

Our current two oap sausage dogs don't offer much protection

One final thing-whatever measures you decide to take make sure you put them in place Every.Single.Time.
Sods law that the only time you forget/can’t be bothered to do it is the one time you actually need it. Do it repetitively so it becomes a muscle memory and then you do it naturally.
The one time I forgot to lock my cheap run around was the one evening a druggie scrote came round opening unlocked cars and taking what he could to feed his habit.
The fact that it was all caught on my CCTV just simply means I can replay him (masked so no ID) nicking my stuff again and again. As I said-don’t get too hung up on tech.

Of course, there is a danger if you make your house very well protected and they really want the car they will either follow you to work etc or jump you as you are getting in or out of the car on your driveway. But for a car as common as the C7 there will probably be an easier option somewhere else.

The old saying if they want it, they'll get it. Equally, if the deterrents are adequate, you've done all you can. I remain a bit amazed that it seems to be accepted that people can break into your house to get the keys. My first thing would, for the sake of the family, make sure the house was not an easy target. Cameras and alarms are after the event fluff, like car electronics. Proper windows, proper doors, proper locks for your family's sake.

I use a Disklok (PIA but as good as it gets) and a few other quirky things that are not a problem to use. A flatbed would see it gone, if they could get to it. For mine, if they had to have it, would prefer it to be away from the home.
