Best 1st Car Options

Post by ShaneyB » Mon Jan 06, 2020 1:05 pm

Hi all, Happy New Year.
My son will be starting his driving lessons soon and I am looking around for the best option for his first car.

I just wondered what your experiences were, particularly around insurance and 'Black Boxes'? What engine size, what manufacturers are good options?

He really wants an A1 but I think they will be out of budget. He also likes Corsa's, Fiesta's etc and had is first Young Driver lesson on Saturday in a Corsa and liked it. He's 6ft 2" and still growing

When I was a kid my first car was whatever I could afford (Opel Kadett) and I have some great memories of that car believe it or not. budget could stretch to around £4-5k depending on insurance quotes.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
Shane

A 2017 RS6 nardo should do it, think of the street cred you would give him....

Spoil sport.

My old man used to have very decent company cars when they made sense and one for mum too

He told me I could drive them until I was 25

Then a work colleague of his said in front of me that it was any age!

Thereafter I got to drive these nice cars to school !

I assume that's a typo and you meant to say you couldn't drive them? Confused me for a second.

Sorry Shane, I don't have anything to add on this topic but I'm interested as my son will be 17 soon.

Indeed, sorry

Surely it’s the normal low powered run arounds. Value doesn’t make much odds as the bigger risk is them damaging 3rd party valuable property.

My girl had an Ibiza and the boy a fiesta.

And no they don’t get to go anywhere near mine, even though they are a lot older !

We have a 1 litre Fiesta for the nanny to drive the kids to school so that will probably be his first car. It's an ST line so doesn't look too bad. I know insurance for these kids is not cheap though.

I reckon a Fiesta or Corsa.
My wife's '09 A5 2.0 TFSi Cab was playing up just after Christmas last year so we decided to chop that in against a newer model. Out of interest i thought I'd get an insurance quote to put my son on that rather than just sack it off. The cheapest quote I got from Confused was....................................................£8720.00 :drink:

I think my first insurance policy was sub £200.00 back in the 80's.
