Grabbing/snatching brakes on C7 RS6 PE - anyone experienced this?

Post by Holmsfree » Sun Jan 27, 2019 9:49 pm

Just back from weekend sprint from SE England to Scottish Borders on some of my favourite roads. We were running 4 up with a full boot too.
I would describe progress as swift but nothing silly.
There were three occasions when during light breaking from highish speeds the car braked more strongly “on its own”. No warning lights came on on the dashboard.
I don’t have any adaptive/assist tech on the car and it is on air.

My guess as to what could cause this:
• Brake assist getting confused (lots of road clag)
• Disc skimming tech getting confused (if this is even a thing anymore)
• Some other technical glitch. As you may have guessed I am not a technical man!!!

Car was bought July ‘18 from Southampton Audi.

Any ideas most welcome!!!

Many thanks in advance.

Same thing as this do you think?

Currently running:
18 plate Lamborghini Huracan Performante (5.2l of V10 naturally aspirated craziness)
67 plate RS6 Performance (fully loaded)
66 plate Range Rover Autobiography (for wafting around)
16 plate Mini Cooper S convertible (lots of fun but rather skittish when thrashed)

Favourite car ever owned:
1971 Citroen DS21 - The Goddess (pure art on wheels)

Thanks for the thread, really helpful.
@daveperc experience seems to be the most comparable. And could easily be the disc wiping function.

I’ll get it looked at because the intervention is severe and potentially dangerous if it happened on a quick corner.

I’ll revert to the forum.

Cheers

Spoke with Southampton Audi today. They were helpful, but as one would expect over the phone, nothing was resolved.
I will book into Reading Audi due to proximity to me, unless any of you good people tell me they are shocking!!

Reading Audi have had the car this week. Their conclusion is that because I have one newish tyre and three tyres that are almost done, then the ABS is getting confused and thinking the car is skidding caused by excessive difference is tread depth.
In my (layman's mind), there is some logic to this but I do not fully agree with their verdict but in the absence of a "live" example and no error codes in the system there is not much else I can do. I am more inclined to go with Scotty C at this moment in time.
I am putting four newish winter tyres on tomorrow and will take the car for a spank and see how we get on.

I'll post anything newsworthy.

Thanks again.

Well, they have a point on the tyres. It's in the manual, should have very similar tread depth across an axle. You have to put a pair on, not one.

Yup. Entirely fair. I got a puncture whilst I was deliberating over new summers and/or new winters......and then forgot to do anything about it. Think I'll get both!

Gutted and furious to report that this issue has returned in very similar circumstances.....on the way home from the Goodwood Breakfast meet. Still in the wet but carrying a lighter load and less speed. The car's intervention under braking was the same.....a firm and unwelcome dab on the brakes that gave everyone in the car a shock.
I'll take the car back to Reading Audi next week. Depending on outcome, may need to consider disposal options as not really up for a car that brakes randomly in the wet.

PS for those that saw this thread first time round, the car is now on winters all round with ~6mm treads.

Holmsfree... did anything ever come of your second visit ? I've had this problem from new and getting nowhere with AUK (or the dealer) except for being told it must be a characteristic of the car (meaning they clearly have no idea). Very worrying when it is so dangerous...

Scotty C, just checking you’d seen my email on this topic? I know my emails sometimes end up in your junk folder....!
