Audi S/RS choices
Audi S/RS choices
I’m looking to come back to the fold after a 6 months away trying out AMG (hasn’t been a happy experience in all honesty).
Been looking at a few cars so would like to know some informed opinions on here please? Cost is a factor-my last RS6 was around £70k and whilst it was epic and the best car I’ve ever owned the fact is my man maths didn’t stand up to reality and I was paying far too much every month to justify.
Short list to date:
1. New S5 or S4 Avant
2. Pre FL RS7 or even S7
3. RS3 Saloon
4. Previous RS5 or B8 RS4
I don’t keep my cars beyond 1-2 years but after the A45 I currently own I’d really like to get a car that I like enough to keep it for more than 6 months (will be posting in the ‘adversaries’ section about the A45 in due course).
Last week I test drove a latest gen S5, 2013 RS5 and also latest RS3 saloon.
Out of those 3 my money was on the RS3 being the one that impressed me the most. Bizarrely I didn’t really gel with it though and I’m not sure why? It was ferociously quick (my A45 is on a Stage 1 tune and the RS3 was quicker) and handled very well although I could feel some understeer coming on in corners (the A45 USP is the handling) and the comfort and tech was light years ahead of the AMG. Possibly it’s because I want a bigger car-really didn’t expect to come away from the RS3 with mixed feelings.
Star of the piece was the S5-it didn’t feel significantly slower than the V8 RS5 (although the engine noise of course was a lot less than that V8 which is epic). Just goes to show how far they’ve come along. The RS5 felt a lot stiffer and handled well but it’s the old tech that let it down a bit. Cheap though-this one was £31,990 on a 63 plate with 25k miles and B & O etc etc.
RS7 is another one to try-I know the power plant well and they look awesome. Good pre-FL ones are around £45k but FL S7s are are a fair bit less (mid to late 30s or less) and am sure MRC etc can work their magic?
A C6 saloon that’s a forum members car came up running ‘ramics and an MRC St2 tune. Fantastic looking car and at a good price (£26,425) but the age meant that finance wise I’d be saving only about £50 a month which is a shame. Haven’t totally ruled it out as my one big regret on my old C6 saloon was not taking it to MRC.
Anyhow-sorry about the long winded post but as always I really appreciate anyone’s thoughts? My A45 is now up for sale since last night and getting a fair amount of interest (it’s got a huge spec and low miles but it wasn’t the right car for me unfortunately). Want to get back into a car I’ll love owning and driving and keep for a while with a mind on residual values around 18 months to 2 years down the line.

Re: Audi S/RS choices
My advise would be. Buy the car that is in your mind and comfort zone. Buy the one that stops you thinking “I wish I’d bought *******”. Dunno if that helps. Me personally, out of that lot, the new S5 as I like to have the most modern technology.

I’d say early to mid 40’s...however as always with any car it’s all about the monthly payments!S4WON wrote:If you are being sensible, which is sounds like you are.stevo55 wrote:I’m looking to come back to the fold after a 6 months away trying out AMG (hasn’t been a happy experience in all honesty).

Re: Audi S/RS choices
That’s what my current thoughts are-I’m very much an RS as opposed to an ‘S’ guy (having said that the S5 I test drove was seriously impressive, didn’t seem much slower than the previous model RS5-although that just felt taut and solid plus that V8 note ). I hear you on the tech and I think Audi are absolutely on point nowadays.Eddie555 wrote:My advise would be. Buy the car that is in your mind and comfort zone. RS7 is very tempting as they have come down in price and have a power plant to die for...

One of the big finance (oracle etc) companies can likely do you something decent on this low miler...
I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Re: Audi S/RS choices
I tend to go for Oracle and they have really been good-highly recommend the guy I use (Paul Turner). RS6 is always an option as I loved mine. Cheers for that link I’ll do some more digging to see what else is out there (I like the RS7s as they tend to have a great spec and are slightly cheaper!S4WON wrote:How about going back to an rs6 then?stevo55 wrote:I’d say early to mid 40’s...however as always with any car it’s all about the monthly payments!S4WON wrote: If you are being sensible, which is sounds like you are.

Sure, but they are cheaper for a reason, as they are less desirable and therefore future value less = payments more.stevo55 wrote:I tend to go for Oracle and they have really been good-highly recommend the guy I use (Paul Turner). Don’t get me wrong, still an awesome car, but i think its a false economy.
You want 3+ years old and something that holds its value well, else you will always take a bath.
Re: Audi S/RS choices
All sound advice mate and to be honest I thought the RS6 was slightly beyond reach within my given budget. I’m currently selling my A45 and the inevitable jokers are starting to come out of the woodwork-this was one from yesterday: ‘I would offer 30k at max and you give me full tank on pick up. That’s my offer 30k cash’
I was actually pleasant on the exchange and along the lines of ‘thanks but no thanks’ but the temptation is always to say ‘we’re not bartering over a f&&cking bag of spuds down the market here sunshine....now do one!’
