Garage not returning old plates

Post by rtd » Wed Mar 14, 2018 10:07 am

I put a new registration on my car few weeks back and had a local dealer supply and fit the plates.

When I came to collect the car I enquired where the old plates were and was told that they had been scrapped. When I questioned why they had done this I was told that it was a requirement of the law?

Is this true I’ve never heard of it before and always been given my old plates?

That sounds like complete bull. I've got my old plates.

That’s what I thought and tried doing a search online and couldn’t find anything.

This site says the direct opposite of your dealer:

http://www.platemaster.com/buyer_faqs.asp?question=3
Since the original marks may be re-assigned to the vehicle following a re-transfer of your new registration plate in the future, it would be a good idea to hold onto the original plastic number plates regardless of whether you want to retain the original mark.
When people tell me "the rules say" then I ask to see the rules. If they can't show me them then they look like fools and have to capitulate. I have had a lot of success with this method. I have also had to eat humble pie on more than one occasion, but I like things to be clear.

The opening poster is saying the garage have destroyed the original 7 digit index pieces of plastic?
