Mice under bonnet

So the wife’s golf gets mice under the bonnet from time to time. Worse this time of year. The little blighters like to nibble on seeds near the battery.
Now I have noticed them nibbling off the insulation on the earth wire from the fuse box.
I have laid traps before and this usually gets them, but we live in the country and have a lot of mice and rats around the area.
Anyone have any other suggestions.

Neighbours have them, they have a habit of sitting on the car so I do my best to kill them with stones.

I worked on dustcarts for 15 years and this was a daily problem with rats finding their way into the bodies and chewing all the wiring for light and hydraulic controls etc, the cost would run into the thousands each year to replace looms etc.
Anyway, we tried every possible way to rid them but to no avail. The only thing they won't chew through is wire wool bizarrely, but obviously you don't want to be filling your bay with that stuff.

My old man had the same problem a few years back; he also lives in the country. Seemed to only really be a problem when the car was kept in the garage. A few traps around the place definitely helped but he now just keeps the car on the drive and the issue has never arisen again!
