That his manager is still in a job is pretty shocking.

Setting someone on fire is not OK, under any circumstances. That's utterly repugnant.

Having been a teenage BMW apprentice some 20 years ago now, I can relate to some of those pranks. Personally, I wasn't set on fire but did have the locked in a cage and soaked with a pressure washer treatment. Also been called over to where some airbags where deliberately set off unbeknown to me (have to be ignited before sending back), I certainly touched cloth that time.

I guess some characters take it in their stride and others do not, a very sad story and ending though. I'm quite appalled to read that both the line managers had knowledge of this behaviour going on and did nothing about it. Mine were unaware back then, but had I felt the need to raise a grievance, I'm sure something would've been done about it.

It used to be extremely common in the Military - Fall asleep in the crew-room, get your boots set on fire - Give someone some lip, get ty-wrapped to a bike rack and hosed down etc.

I joined the RAF in the mid -90's and caught the tail end of it so have been involved both ways. However by the time the "older" guys (FLEM's who joined 80's) had started to leave in the late 90's no-one from the "new" generation (mine) continued the practices and it virtually died out with a matter of years without any formal "You will not............" having to be ordered, until a couple of Firemen went massively OTT during one of these "initiations" and quite rightly ended up in military jail.

TBF 90% of the time there was no malice involved and it was laughed off by everyone involved but there was always that 10% where either the person involved wasn't happy (we'd stop) or someone started taking it too far, in which case they'd get a thump for being a ****.

In this case the BMW kid would have have been one of the 10% we'd have left alone as he obviously wasn't able to cope. Unfortunately his manager is a complete **** and I'd have been very hard pressed not to assault during the hearing if it had been my kid involved.

If everyone laughs, it's funny. If everyone but one laughs, it's persecution.

Like others, I received similar pranks during my apprenticeship. The difference those doing the pranks to me we're very aware of the signs when it crossed the line.

Absolute terrible outcome.

The remarks in the press by the garage presented a very poor attitude.

@ianh - like you I'd have to be restrained in court if it was my child.

The really sick thing is that the manager will sleep like a baby after this I absolutely guarantee it. There isn't even the slightest hint of remorse that one of his employee's has died from his statement. Luckily this is gaining massive traction on the web now so hopefully Audi UK will step up but I doubt it after the coroner gave the branch a "get out of jail free" card :(

They did a TV news piece on BBC south last night. The fire incident was supposedly testing out fire retarding work wear by spraying brake cleaner on his trousers and setting it alight. Still not right, but it does give a little more context.

Bullying is bullying, physical and mental/psychological. It's not big and it's not clever and it's not a rite of passage either!
Glasgow audi had a similar case of this about 10 year ago...the apprentices involved got sacked (not the instigators)...
