Small number plates

Post by stevo55 » Fri May 05, 2017 9:28 am

What's the law regarding the shorter number plates (with standard size lettering)? Deciding on whether to stick with regular size or go for smaller seeing as my private plate is only 5 digits. Who makes them, any ideas?

I only ever go for Standard letters and cut ends off but leave 10mm from end of letter to end of plate and that's legal. on saying that its been a while since I looked at the regs. Done this for over 20 years and never been stopped.

I believe the margins at all edges need to be 11mm to be legal.

INV104 from the DVLA lists the requirements:

Characters must be 79mm tall
Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
The space between characters must be 11mm
The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm

Random numbers?

I personally think that short number plates look a bit rubbish and mess with the visual proportions of the car.

It depends on the car. One of mine (the Audi) has mounting plates/recesses so only standard sizes are sensible despite the short cherished registration.
The other is a sort of "bolt-on" setup with no designed-in recesses so a short plate (when I change it to a personalized one) will be better.

I suppose you could get the US mounting plates for smaller plates.

What about all black plates? I'd think they would be illegal and the photos ive see are show plates that have been wrapped.

Tinted plates which I think you refer to are legal until your stopped by a copper who isn't in the know! All plates should possess the makers name post code and the BS AU145d mark

Yeah it's Ebay. Just type 5digit number plate in search bar and you'll find it " Mr Reg" is the maker. You have to order yellow and white in two separate orders
