New Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

Post by stevo55 » Tue Oct 04, 2016 12:10 pm

Michelin just released their latest tyre, not sure why Audi don't use Michelin (Pirelli and Dunlop seem to be the default choice), first thing I did on my RS6 was ditch the Pirellis and go for MPSS. Excellent tyres.

So there's the PS4 (which I'm interested in) and now the PS4S which replaces the MPSS?

Interesting. I'll definitely be trying some when the time comes, but now I'll have the dilemma of choosing between the PS4 and the PS4S. :(

It sounds like the PS4 is a direct replacement for the MPSS, the PS4 they currently don't make for 20 inch rims unfortunately and the P4S may well be the same, they will in time and I've got plenty of life left in my MPSS. Either way probably the best performance tyre on the market for both wet and dry conditions

If you read that link it's clear (if reported correctly) that the new tyre (NOT the PS4) is a replacement for the MPSS and will be available in 19" and 20" sizes.

MPSS will still be available in C6 RS6 size (275/35-20) for a long time as they are a BMW OEM fit and Michelin have said that OEM sizes will still be made.

I'll probably be changing over to the new MPS4S as soon as they become available though, not because they're amazing but because I currently need new tyres every 2-3 months due to Stupid Kent Moron Drivers causing me to dive into hedgerows to avoid an accident, tearing the sidewalls on my MPSS (8 tyres in 14 months!).

Seriously, I've driven on almost every continent yet the "standards" between the best and worst drivers in Kent is the largest I've ever know. I've had to come to a complete stop and beep the horn to alert the morons that maybe a head-on crash isn't great so many times it's not funny. My last one was a bimbo in a RRS who was barreling down a 40mph country road at 60+ whilst in the middle of the road and looking down at her mobile, yet she had the nerve to call me a w@nker for beeping her after she swerved back into her lane about 15ft from the front of my car narrowly avoiding hitting me. I'd even selected reverse as I thought she wouldn't see me despite the horn beeping!

Yes but that same test put the Pirelli P-Zero as the best tyre in the wet!!! What? No way!

If it's this test you're thinking of, the MPSS was mid-table overall, but best in the dry (by a bit of a margin on the subjective test.)

Still not tried them. I'm on conti sportcontact 5's on one set of wheels, and GY eagle F1's on the other.

The dual compound composition of the new 4S sounds interesting though, and those test results look promising.

Except it doesn't (last year it only rained for between 120-180 days depending on location), and the MPSS is still extremely good in the wet. Plus I also find it hard to believe that their extremely good reputation is "fanboi"-ism when no-one has anything to gain from it. I loved the GY F1AS2 on the C5 but prefer the MPSS on the C6 and I've only found the MPSS to be worse than the GY's when the temp is below 6'c.

Until the announcement of the MPS4S I was looking to swap to the CSC6 when the MPSS supply ran out or became too expensive but their life span is nearly 1/2 of the MPSS/MPS4S which makes them just as expensive again, if not more so but they are still a very good tyre.

Good point, I only run my MPSS's (on 20's) in the summer anyway and have winter tyres (separate set of 18" wheels) on typically from November to maybe April.
They are definitely sharper, grippier and more predictable than any other tyre I've tried on my D2 S8's over the last 15 years.

There is a YouTube tyre review by a guy in a modded E92 M3. His view was that the Conti SC6 does just beat the MPSS, but it doesn't communicate as well to the driver. With that in mind he preferred the SS. I'll be sticking with them TBH. I'll wait for the proper reviews on the MPS4S to see if it is actually as good. Remember many folk thought the 4 was a SS replacement originally. Well I suppose this finally proves otherwise.

<beep> name though!

Interesting review. He reckons the CS6 might be better for the RS4 / RS6.

I'll be watching this guy for his reviews of the PS4 and PS4S.
