Hi all
As above really and Im sure this may have been asked before but just want to know what peoples opinions on going from Rs6 - Rs4 are ?
Mines running at just over 500bhp and im not sure if i'll be doing to right thing in changing, i know the 4 wont have the same kick in the back but i feel its time for a change after 4 years or so.
My day to day car is a 2006 golf gti which has a revo remap on which is a great drive (plenty of torque and is just effortless)

Thoughts and experience would be great

Cheers

Footlong has both, they each have their advantages.

having driven both the question is a simple one, do you want outright straight line speed and power (would you miss 500+ bhp?), or a more rounded package that wont have the straight line power of an RS6 but is more of an all rounder?

I did a mini back-to-back review once. I'll try to find it.

Shoppinit wrote:Well, yesterday I had a chance to find out. Went out to find some decent roads with a friend in a stock B7 RS4. Me in my unmolested (450hp) RS6.

Regardless of performance, it was bloody good fun. Anyway, here are the results of our test:

Straight line acceleration to about 120ish there is very little in it. He was first on the throttle and I was behind catching him up... but not rapidly. I would definitely have overtaken him given enough runway, but there was so little in it, to all practical purposes the straight line performance is the same.

In the twisty stuff I think he was surprised how nimble the RS6 is, but he still was all over my ass. No doubt that the RS4 is more agile, but the RS6 is no slouch either. But for sure, you won't lose an RS4 in the twisty stuff if you're in a RS6. But neither will you shame an RS6. Didn't help that I was 2 up, either.

Then we decided to swap cars. This is my impression of the RS4:

No doubt it feels slower when you've just been driving an RS6. If we hadn't just gone head to head I would have sworn that it was a slower car. In the RS6 you get a large swell of power from low down which makes the car feel powerful. In the RS4 you have to work the engine. When you do start working the engine, you very quickly (and deceptively) get up to proper speeds.

Once you start pushing the RS4, though, it's a real pleasure. I was surprised how instantly at home I felt in it, giving it the beans. Extremely responsive and once you get used to changing gear at 8000 rpm you get a big grin on your face that you can't turn off.

Braking felt about the same in both. Steering very similar in both.

Suspension was interesting. The RS4 was on sports plus suspension, working very nicely. It felt surprisingly similar to my '6 on PSS9s. Same comfort, very similar handling.

The only negative thing I can say about the RS4 is that I wasn't able to find a comfortable driving position. I don't like the seats, but they do hold you in much better than the RS6 seats.

In summary, neither car will "rip apart" the other. They are both excellent, excellent cars. They both look stunning and they both perform very similarly, in straight line or twisty stuff.

The RS6 is slightly quicker in a straight line, but not massively. The RS4 is slightly better in the corners, but not massively. No big surprises there.

a supercharged B7 would close the performance stakes however, but they are very rare.

Thanks to you all particularly Shoppinit for that excellent write up of your experience of driving both, I think that sums it up well
Decisions decisions, I need to do a few small jobs to make mine ready to sell and make my mind up..

Thanks all for your input

How did your friend like the '6 Shop?

Heardy, I'd be quite happy with the RS4 and on twistier roads they'll be fun to drive whereas the RS6 is a bit awkward due to tall gearing. I love the top end of the RS6, but I rarely see >160, so not sure it's worth it.

He was positive, but it was a while ago so I can't remember much more. He didn't rush out and buy one, though! He's got a B8 RS4 now.

The important thing with the RS4 is to make sure you get one that's making all its power (the one in the 'review' was dyno'd at 420ish IIRC). I had 2 more friends with RS4 one I could easily keep up in a straight line with in the M3. When it was dyno'd it was only making 370 bhp.

Another friend had his de-carbonated, MRC map and had the air intake mod. It was quick, very quick.

Si, if you remember Help for Hero's a few years ago. My stock (but carbon cleaned) black saloon was pretty quick around Bruntingthorpe. I think your C5 was c.480-500bhp at that time?

As my family grew I sold the B7 saloon. I tried a C5 with the view of keeping it for family duties and a Clio RS for short journeys, etc. Neither were for me. I then tried a mapped C6, which was very quick, but for me was too big and heavy for the corners. I ended up deciding I wasn't ready to give the B7 up as it was so good at everything, so we've squeezed into an Avant and that works perfectly. It's carbon cleaned, stage 2, etc, etc. I'd be more than happy to have an RS6 and I absolutely love each version of it, but I'd want a more engaging car for 80% of the time. B7 FTW!

Possibly fire DK (HYFR) a PM on here. He's had about 7 B7's, several C5's including a Plus as well as pretty much all other S, RS and R Audi's and is therefore in a pretty good position to comment.
